Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Its held on to the hatch by a self tapping screw and a 10mm nut on a stud set in the spoiler on each side. The screw is fairly long (around 5-6 cm)so make sure you use exactly the right length.
To fit just drill 4 holes in the correct position in the hatch using the spoiler as a template and tighten it up. No sealant/adhesive is used.

When the system is depressurised the majority of the LHM goes back to the tank.
The spheres will be empty of LHM but full of gas.
There will be some LHM in the brake lines, the various pipes, the PR, the steering rack and the pump.
You can bleed the brakes to get fresh LHM in them.
As to the rest I would not worry

Heater matrixs are not known for their long life in a Xant si it may weep but a quarter litre would have soaked the carpet by now. If the rad is newish, the bubbles may just be because the system has not been properly bled. I've known that cause an apparent loss of coolant where the air pockets suddenly fill and cause a water drop. Could be HG but...

Purchased a Xantia TD for my dad. I've done about 20miles in it now and it seems to have lost about a quarter of a litre of coolant.
There is a smell from the matrix...probable heater matrix leak, but I can't see any signs, yet.
Possibly a rad leak, but I can't see one, plus the rad looks almost new.
Possibly a water pump leak, again I can't see...

No MOT, no tax, BAD rust in the doors, approaching 200k and its an XM-the owner probably hasn't been able to give it away!!!
These are 10 a penny with MOT etc and a lot cleaner bodywise- unless its very local to you to go and look at and make a silly offer, I wouldn't bother!! Just hang on for a better one.....£150, he's got to be joking!!

The idle cable on mine seems to get pulled or released at all sorts of different times, i.e. hot / cold idle adjustment is just one of the things it does. On my TD Xantia, whenever I have the air con on, at about 2000rpm, there is a rather noticable flat spot, then a sudden surge of power after it. This goes away with the air con switched off. Now, I have adjusted the idle control lever on the back of the fuel pump to permanently be on the hot setting at 850rpm...

Does anybody know whether the rear axle for the Xara is a straight swap for a ZX? Also are the saloon and estate axles the same? In the same vane, will a disk/abs Xara rear axle be compatible with my at present drum braked non abs ZX or are the brake lines etc re routed? My ZX rear axle is making terminal graunching noises.

I agree with the mounting being different but with a little imagination you can make it fit, only problem with the radiators is the automatic transmition type because it has a built in oil cooler but I have even seen them fitted to manual cars as they just blank the cooler pipes off.

My ZX seems to have a haunted rear wiper which operates sometimes when the aftermarket immobiliser hasn't picked up the key tag. job has not been done right, firstly are they new spheres, and yes at full hight the orange marker should be at the max level so it seems you need LHM fluid and the system will need bleeding that their job not your you paid for it get them to sort is as soon as possible because it could burn the pump out if you use the car without lhm fluid and no...

I'm not sure about the RHD XM, but on my LHD version ('98) the spring arrangement was exactly the same as my old series 1 XM, i.e. same as Xantia. Just pull out the plastic cylinder and remove the spring - you can adjust the height of the pedal by fitting different lengths of tubing instead (12mm dia. copper water pipe or similar).

I know about the well known brake pedal mod for the Xantia (removing the spring from the spacer/pushrod to improve the feel).
I did this on my Xantia and I love how the brake pedal feels.
The question is, is there a similar mod for a series 2 XM (rhd) because I hate the springy feel of the pedal on mine?

I have a problem with nonHA xantia with antisink spere '98. TurboD. The front end of the car doesnt drop at all when set to normal height, it stays on that UP position. I've greased the struts, but the problem still stays. Even overnight, the back end drops , but the front sinks only 2-3 cm.

I've had a problem with my BX ever since i put new struts on it that it sticks and then jumps violently when rising.
I've lubed the struts via the return pipe methods but it did very little. Well finally today i took strut off and took the opportunity to examine the strut top. I've really gone to town with the strut off lubing it up. We shall see...

Tough one
Non-Clio or alloy wheels fitted ? - could be wrong offset (ET) then.
Problem could be in the rack itself - i.e. when under noticeable load it tends to lock up in the pinion gear. May simply be lack of grease.

Looking at the EBD catalogue, all Xsaras with rear discs have the same pads, the EBD part number for them is DP 458/2, this is the same pad that the ZX gets according too.

A few months ago fitted rear pads into the Xsara HDI estate . Pads which I purhased didnt fit , The lug on back too near the top same shape apart from this lug(1.5mm out) . These where Lockheed delphi lp699 . After spending next few hours getting correct pads which where Lockheed Delphi LP1778 , lug in correct place all ok . I am now investigating...

just a correction - what i meant to say was that the arm+pivot together move up and down a bit.
I can't seperate the arm from the pivot rod. Is hammering the centre pivot or lever (and thereby doing some damage) the only option ?

me again, the car will start with jump leads, went to get a new battery from my regular supplier of tyres etc, and instead of taking my money he says it is probably a loose earth connection somewhere so a new battery will not help, what an honest chap. Bought a car (Fraud Fiasco) in 95 which the dealer fitted new tyres to the front - used some cheapo Yugoslavian jobbies.
After a few months I noticed an odd noise at first I thought might be a bearing on its way west, closer investigation revealed the tread to be parting company with the carcass.
It just goes to prove....

Hi. I'm afraid I am unable to answer many of your tech questions, but can add that I owned an Activa as a company car (dealer maintained) for a short time and found the performance to be almost as good as my 3.0 but with the advantage of a manual box plus it seemed to run the same as any 'normal' Xantia until you went round corners and boy does it...

During the recent hot spell they have been running at the higher speed about 50% of the time and at the lower speed, the other 50%. dont bother with complicating things,just remove rad filler cap andplug from top of rad,put heater to hot pour coolant in untill it comes out of plug hole and stops sincking,replace plug,now remove any other bleed valves,keep putting coolant in till it comes out of them,somtimes you might have to have engine running at this point before you get...

Doing a coolant change on my parent's Xantia 1.8 petrol. Never really done this job before and finding it rather tedious now that I've drained and flushed the system and put everything back together.
I haven't got anything to use as an expansion tank header tank to raise coolant level in the expansion tank to a level above the highest pipe...

easiest method is to do it with Samco hoses or similar and all the proper joins, probelm is that it will cost a right fortune. Have a hunt around and there will be companies making custom hoses but usually for strange things like tractors and diggers and things!

Yes, it can be done. It is neither simple nor cheap, budget £500 for a car with the right bits and the work you'll have to do to fit it. Several weekends' work will be necessary, too.

A friend of mine had an L reg Xantia 1.9TD that was still going strong at 225K
Unfortunately he wasn't bothering to check the water level and a minor water leak led to the engine overheating & seizing. He got an engine from a scrap Pug 406, put it in the Xantia and got another 30k out of it before someone ran into the back & wrote it off!

Looking at a 1993 Xantia SX 1.9 TD(for my Dad),it has 184,000 miles on it.
Question is this....how many more miles can I expect out of the old girl??
It has been very well cared for, regular servicing, etc. I've no reason to believe it's been driven hard.

the trafficmaster ECU is located behind the glovebox but i doubt it would just be a plug in job. is there wiring for the switch on your car ?

With engine running and set on maximum height, with a axle stand slightly lower under the car, get a jack and lift the car by jacking it under the arm so it is forced to engage the ball joint again. This should stop it rotating on itself. Remove the nut. Remove the stand let the suspension fall on to the lowest point on the jack which should now...

If it was feasible, I think the makers of all cars would have done this years ago.
Personally I think the stress and jarring on the components would be such that you'd be snapping and cracking things everywhere.

I dont really know but I would think that if it has a manual adjustment it would pull the pedal up, otherwise the cable would be sloppy.

Hi,
I plan to tidy up all the niggly probs on my Synergie in readiness for selling it late summer ( small dent reapirs etc ). One of its niggles is the wheel is cocked slightly since it had a full clutch change in November due to sub-frame removal.
I hoped that the tracking might be slightly out and the fresh adjustment at kwik-fit would pull it...

My xantia has no power there is no 'kick' from the turbo when pulling away and whilst driving up an incline my foot is flat to the floor dong 60mph with no accelration.
Could this be the MAP sensor?

Centre so called anti-sink sphere will only affect the height after starting. Suspension spheres won't affect drop after the car has stopped.
You get out of the car, suspension rises due to the reduction in weight. Height corrector opens to reset height, car should drop back to its normal height. Is this in fact what you are seeing? If its going...

the brake light switch inside the pedal is probably the most common cause of CC failure on the xantia even if the brake lights are working ok.i believe there are 2 sets of contacts.

Mothers doesn't work.
I've checked the fuses & renew them to be sure but still no joy. I've been told there is a pipe that can pop off somewhere under the battery? from my data it looks like the twin fans are at the rear of the condenser so it wont need removing, never done one but I would say the radiator needs to come out unless the slam panel can be removed, have you checked if there is power going to the aircon fans you could try to power them up from the battery this will save you lots of work and time...

That wasn't a head gasket. That was running on engine oil. Usually only when the engine is venting like a sod, or has completely worn out rings. Can also happen if the engine has been overfilled with oil.
The best way to stop the engine when this happens is to put the car in 5th, and stand hard on the brakes.
