Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

First job is to test the earth connection. There's not much point in following up the fuse side if it's something as simple as that. Just unhitch the positive terminal (the one that's melted, I'd assume) and run a multimeter from there to a solid grounding point. If you get a resistance reading (ohms), then that's one less thing to think about....

Ensure that the car is on flat ground when checking the level.
The only place where the LHM can go is into the spheres, if the diaphragm ruptures.
Check the spheres for proper 'springiness' front and back with the engine running.
At switch-on, the pressure warning lights should take 13 seconds to go out.

That's only used for holding up the wheel for you while you put the screws in, IMHO.
Never used one of those, as the wheels are self-centering, too.

I would suggest, as it is a Renault, park it in a hedge and runaway quickly, before anybody sees! Get a Citroen, you know it makes sense.

Dont know on the design of the Xantia wire splitter. But on BX'es it is wellknown that these heavy duty connectors go open circuit because of bad quality in the crimping of the connectors & corrosion.
It is very clear from your diagnosis that you have a similar problem on your Xantia. Follow the problem towards the battery using a heavy Amp bulb...

A strange problem has just started happening on my Xantia 2.1TD. When I start it up first thing in the morning, it revs up to 1600rpm. This then fluctuates between 1400 and 1600rpm untill it gets to the 80'C point on the temperature gauge. It has never done aything like this before. Does anyone know what has causedthis to happen?

It should be on the end behind the n/s front wheel. It is sometimes difficult to differenciate the filler from the end plate bolts, but you should find that one is slightly bigger, at the bottom, toward the front. You will probably have to remove the inner wing cover/splashguard to get to it.

Having just completed the Octopus this afternoon I am left with topping up the gearbox to replace the approx 0.8 litre of gearbox oil I lost when taking the drive shaft out.
The Haynes picture is wrong for the gearbox and the supplement does not show an alternative.

Hi Stuart, I have same problem with my ZX. I've found if I close the door hard and at the same time aim the key fob I usually ge a result, points to something dodgy in the door locking system and NOT your key fob!!

Does it have a fuel primer pump? if it does and its of the diaphragm type they can leak, If not that does it have a fuel heater? you will find it bolted to the n/s end of the cylinder head (follow the pipe from the pump) these go porous, just disconnect the pipes and join them together.

The easiest way to do it is to put your hand in front of the headlight lens to see which part the LH dip is shining through and then cover it with sticky tape. (no, not your hand!)

Hi Marco, it is worth checking to see if it is the abs ecu as this involves a very simple test.
When you turn on the ignition, does the ABS light flicker at least two or three times? It is very faint so you have to be observant. If it does, the chances are that the ABS ecu is alright and that the fault lies elsewhere.

I think the switch is just a pair of contacts in the fuel filter body, water bridges them and the light comes on, have you removed the filter element and checked for water visually? I had a problem with water and used a product called dry fuel which makes the water mix with the diesel and burn in the engine, I believe euro diesel uses this type of...

I am getting the water in filter warning regularly now that I have changed to 100% bio diesel.
The problem is that when I try to resolve the problem (i.e. use the filter drain), nothing at all comes out. Is this normal, if not has anyone fixed this problem before?

Make sure that the suspension lifts smoothley, and that includes playing with the control lever next to the handbrake - (BUT DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR IN ANY OTHER MODE, MAKE SURE IT'S IN THE MIDDLE SETTING) without any noises or jerkeyness. Are sure it would be worth changing the engine just because it has piston slap. My Laguna 1.8i which has had oil changes every 3000 miles and normal servicing suffers with piston slap. The tapping goes when the engine gets some heat into it. Only worry if it continues when the engines hot.

Well I run on veg oil and have done for about 2 years, I have a Lucas pump and havnt had any problems

barkers are useless,i wanted an alternator belt tensioner for a belingo 1.9d.told me it wasnt a citroen original part fitted to that model so couldnt sort it out( cant be bothered more like!)
went to dixon peugeot in grimsby and they cross referenced the vehicle to peugeot etc,and had all parts in my hand within five minutes!

It would be helpful if you put your model etc of car! :) If it's a Xantia, do a search on ignition switch, they fail and cause these symptoms.

Most likely the cable has snapped either end.
The clutch release arm in the clutch housing may have split - but this is the rare version of the problem.

while parking my zx earlier the clutch pedal went to the floor and didn't return. The clutch is now engaged, i have tried pulling on the pivot arm but it didn't do any good. Any ideas what may have happened? as i have never come across this before

Same thing has happened to my 1996 XM 2.1 TD Exclusive. Rear still works but front is dead. I had put off looking at it as I didn't want to take out the washer tank.

all the sensors activate when reverse gear is selected then the fronts remain active for approximately 5 seconds after the car is taken out of reverse.

PSA diesels uses Beru plugs as genuine parts discussed here :

The 3 Beru glow plug types found in the Xantia diesels are available from GSF - online shop lists your model (home button upper right).
If you insist on Bosch then go to their main site and look up your vehicle.

I'm pretty sure that the sunroof seal on most cars isnt 100% watertight anyway, there should be special drain channels to collect and drain away any water that gets inside the sunroof seal, and if yours is leaking then its likely that the drain channel is blockd with leaves and muck and stuff, this causes the drips to fill up the drain channel and...

There is no *legal* requirement to have a catalyst on any car, but it's about the only way that petrol cars can meet ever more stringent emission requirements.
As far as diesels are concerned, they only have to be below a certain opacity limit on exhaust smoke, and the removal of the catalyst wiill have little or no effect on this. Go for it!

You will miss the HP suspension, as i've heard the C4 is a bit on the hard side.

Well what with the recent hassel about the cat on my C5 I'm thinking of going for new Had looked at C3 & C4 both with the HDI engine I think my buget would only allow for the 1.6hdi in a sx or vtr+ but not sure as this would be my 1st brand new car. The big plus is no MOT low Tax Great fuel and 3 year warrenty that means if it breaks...

IIRC the Xantia has a tiny blowerfan in the airduct right behind the grille to keep the cabin air temp sensor informed about air temp.
They wear and can make a faint ticking sound.

Can anyone explain the ticking sound I get from the dashboard on my Xantia 1.8 SX when I start up ? I reported it to my garage and they did not get rid of it, but said it was probably a 'temperature sensor working to excess . They are a good garage so I can only assume the cost of correcting it is high.

The instrument display on my 2000 1.6 Xsara is behaving strangely.
Engine not running with ignition on - switch headlights on - speedo and tach light up.
Engne running - switch headlights on - instruments light up for a moment and then switch off.

a soft tyre will do it too, as does road camber, tracking usually shows up by uneven (edge) tyre wear, balancing by shaking steering wheel/vibration.

Something to do with the float in the carb??? A local citroen specialist near me fixed mine when it went, cost about £50. Apparently they need cleaning and resetting, and possibly a new part fitting. Any garage should be able to help id have thought. Only other thing I can think of is that the coil, ignition pack, and the distributor cap / rotor...

I have a citroen zx 1.4 (with manual choke) 1992. It has trouble starting, sometimes taking 6 or 7 attempts before it starts. It will also lose power temporarily when driving, the revs drop and the car loses power before it gains power with a jolt again. It has stalled on occasions. Sounds like one of the many things the timing belt goes round is beginning to fall apart. I'd suggest not driving the car until it's been checked out.
I had a stone hit the bottom half of the timing belt cover on mine, the belt jumped a couple of teeth as a result. The management light came on for a few seconds but then went out again in spite of...

If the system is working efficiently, the 'hot' side should be getting hot fairly quickly, as this is the heat that is being removed by the evaporator, if the aircon doesn't seem to be as cold as it was, its probably not working as well as it was.

Millie, no need to worry, the car should be fine. If you are very concerned, just add about 3 litres of cooking oil from any supermarket to your fuel (put it straight into the fuel tank) that will offset the 'thinning' effect of the petrol, but it's not really necessary..

As I understand it, you can de-program a keypad immobilised pump by starting the engine and whilst its running unplugging the keypad but obviously you'll need the original keypad and code to do this.
If the injection pump on your old engine is fine, why not just swap it over to the new engine?

Current 1.9 td has thrown a piston ring, hence easier (and half the cost of rebore/headwork) to swap whole engine. Have found a pug xud9te in local scrapper.
Problem is that it has a keypad immobilsed pump - but keypad has been knackered by some numpty.

Have you checked that there is gas in the accumulator sphere?
Does the car have hydractive suspension (with a switch that allows you to change between normal and sport suspension?

I hv several instances of the car dropping from normal height normally when something like the steering is turned. The last instance happens when the door is open after some testing of the acc and suspension spheres. These 'turbulence' drops are quite unnerving and am definitely sticking to the no crawling under car without jacks advice.

Citroen recomend Total Quartz 7000 semi synthetic - having used this myself at 44K miles I am not sure if its a little thin for the engine, certainly the noise level increased once I switched from the Turbo Diesel muck the supplying dealer had put in (some cheap stuff).
