Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

I parked my car in the morning outside job and after 10 hours i couldnt engage any gear at all with the engine running. I switched the motor off engage second gear and than started the motor. Got home in second gear.
The clutch had been changed a year before. What can it be?

The driver side footwell of my xantia wagon is soaked with LHM. It explains the mysterious drop of LHM level without any visible puddle under the car, but now it leaves me with the question of which part of the circuit is leaking. The prime suspect seems to be the brake valve since it is the only hydraulic part that intrude into the cabin. Or...

When the wife's BX did the LHM-bath stunt, there was so much LHM in the carpet that I gave up, ripped it out and replaced it with one from a breakers. They take sod all for carpets - it was mainly the time taken - but I'm sure it would have taken longer to get the LHM out! (and that smell!!)

How do you adjust the handbrake travel on a Xantia.

Mine now clicks about 10 notches.

Is it in the car in the same place as on a ZX?

Don't really see that they can be over-adjusted. I've had the car from new and it's always been on the second click. Of course, the handbrake travels a fair distance without any clicks.

It sounds like it has had some teeth pulled; mine only travels a cm or so before 1st click.
Thus your 2 clicks = 10 clicks or so for me.

Hello all,

I am pleased to say I have recently come into the possession of a 97R ZX Turbo Diesel. It's in great condition, 70K miles, drives well, outperforms reppy in his 318i etc etc.

The only problem I've had with the car is cold starting. The car starts very easily from cold but runs rough on three cylinders for a few seconds before kicking...

I have to get a couple of new tyres, I have at the moment energy tyres I think from Pirelli. These are supposed to give lower rolling resistance IE more mpg. Are they all they are supposed to be? what difference could I expect if I fitted normal tyres.

Usually Citroëns seem to ride better on Michelins. From this make, i would recommend the Primacy range, excellent grip, either in wet or dry surfaces.
I can't wait for my Energies to loose the thread, and it seems the Energy type of tyre starts to develop cracks by 4 years of age, independant of their milage.

Is it quite safe to have the Xantia front on ramps and then set it to minimum height and then lay underneath to do a bit of greasing and inspection, and similarly the rear aswell, without the fear of being crushed.

Note also the handbrake operates on the Front wheels Not the usual rear!

Always choc the wheels that are on the ground, you may notice that the wheels may setlle on them a bit as suspension relaxes slightly.

There are on this site lots of good tips on stopping the ramps slipping - like putting carpet underneath

My current pre-facelift 97 TD VSX has cloth seats. The drivers seat has lumbar support, which I find pretty uncomfortable, as it makes my back ache after a few miles, unless I have the seat reclined, which makes the driving position a bit awkward. Hi all, I have a Xantia Hdi 110 and was wondering when i should have the cam belt changed. It is a December 2000 with 29000 miles on it.
Any info would be great.

Ford design their belts with wide pulleys and consequently 10 years or 100k miles is realistic, achievable and OK in most cases.

But for cars that have oil leaks or badly designed systems (many Citroen engines of an earlier age) probably 50k is much safer.

My question is hopefully simple. I need to topup the Coolant on our 2001 Y Plate Xsara. Do these all use Ethlyn Glycol type coolant, or will it be the more modern OAT stuff?

I'm in the process of changing the rear subframe mounts on the ZX. Took the boot carpet out and noticed the back off side corner was a bit damp. On investigation there is a 'pocket' in the metal work behind the light cluster, and this is full of water :cry:

Richard, from what i have experienced with leaks in my ZX it sounds like you have a similar problem as i do. I haven't really paid much attention to it though, as the water coming in was very little although if ignored during the rainy season could flood the boot.

Basically, i've torn apart the entire boot to trace the leak and found it one day....

As the warning light is on, there will be a fault code stored. You're going to have to bite the bullet and get the codes read by either a dealer, or someone equipped with the appropriate equipment. This should point you in the general direction of the problem...

I'm, thanks to a recenty diagnosed failing power steering ram, going to be removing the stering rack assy tomorrow to replace the thing (the ram that is).

I've gone through haynes and it looks easy enough, but are there any things the BOL has neglected to mention? Also, I've been putting off changing the track rods and track rod ends for the last...

If it's similar to the Xantia setup, you can push back / remove the gaiters and put at vice on the ball housing. It should unscrew easy enough. Have a look at the new spare, and it should be obvious. Apparently there should be some special tool for this, but as Brian advised, a vice will due the job.

Sorry I put this on the end of an old post which now seess wrong.
I have the code, just didn't remember it at the right timebut it has locked out and does not want to unlock.

I drove to Preston and back from Boston. Waiting for Code in to re-appear but it didnt. If after waiting several hours I press the Band button, a second line of dashes...

Since ive had the car ive had problems with the boot lock, since nothing needs currently doing on the car I thought I would look into this.

If i come to open the car using the fob all doors and boot unlocks, however after a 40 min drive i can park up, switch the engine off, take the key out and go straight to the boot and the boot wont open, i...

My Xantia is the same.

If you remove the panel and watch the mechanism you'll see that the solenoid is working fine, but as you say, after a long drive it locks itself - that's gravity & vibration that is.

(Mine also locks itself if you shut the lid a bit too hard.)

It's terrible when nothing has broken for a while and so you start inventing...

Having replaced the rear spheres on my 2.1 td the ride is great at the back but now is harsh on the front drivers side. I am assuming this sphere now needs replaced, is this a straight forward job? Grateful for any advice or any tips/pitfalls

Front end sphere are very easy to change compared to the back end ones 8) , so if you survived those, you will have no trouble at all with the front end spheres. Be advised to change the spheres in pairs, i.e. change both front end spheres ones you are at it so both sides will have the same suspensione characteristics.

I have a problem with the steering on my ZX volcane TD, I'm not sure if it's leading to something dangerous happening so any advice greatly appreciated.

Over the past two weeks occasionally, but usually when manouvering at a very low speed / parking, the steering stiffens greatly up when turning the steering wheel to the left, almost as is...

As long as nothing else is damaged its just a question of unscrewing the nut on the bottom of the ball joint, you will then probably need a balljoint seperator to remove it from the arm, then unscrew it from the track rod, noting its position and fit replacement, it would then be best to get the wheel alignment checked.

Got a new track rod (10£+VAT) and used Brian,s vice method, which I guess you could do in about 15min including changing the track rod end if it wasn't for the :evil: gaiter..

All well, just need to get the tracking done.. only to find out the right side track rod has also seized.. (heat/WO40 => no joy!); should had gotten a 2nd track rod from...

I have a 2.0HDI C5 2002 model. The rear suspension makes a clonking noise on bad bumpy roads.( Of which there are many in Ireland!!)
I bought the car privately so I have no come back with a garage.
However I did ask my local Citroen dealer to have a look at it. He says it needs two new rear spheres and dampers to stop the noise.

I'm going to bleed the rear brakes on my TZD tomorrow - have given both rear bleed screws a good soaking with WD40 tonight and will give them another one in the morning before trying to get them loose. Since the rear brakes are in the same circuit as the rear suspension, are there any tricks to bleeding them, such as a jack under the suspension...

I tried that tonight after getting home and if I move the height lever to high immediately after shutting off the engine, the rear of the car will rise a bit. If I wait for 30 seconds or so after shutting off the engine before doing it, nothing happens. Same for sitting in the boot - car will sag and then raise up if I do that right after shutting...

When I start my Xantia 1.9 TD it has started to be smoky white smoke from exhaust and also quite a bit from under the bonnet at the back of the engine near heatrt bulkhead.

The water system seems fine , Oil levels are fine, and performance is fine I changed glow plugs 2000miles ago.

Hi Guys,
Have a look at your air filter and the casing also. If the filter is blocked you will get a large (ish) amount of smoke and you may get smoking if the case is cracked too.

I spent a good part of last weekend changing the subframe mounts in our ZX. Although it's only done 70k, it's 94M, and there was plenty of clonking from the rear. I drove it a short distance last weekend to check all was OK, and noted no more clonking :) However, I drove it today for about 10 miles along a twisty road. Wow. :D Before it went round...

I was checking my tyre pressures on the xantia and just be chance i took of the trims and had a look to see if the weights were there an lo and behold only the offside front had a 5g weight, all others nothing there. :shock:

For a while i felt the car is not particularly stable at high-speed ie 70mph+ and recently noticed some vibration at...

Turns out all the wheels needed to have weights on the outside, even the rim with the weight on was the wrong weight :x, the fitter (consulting tyre assistant or whatever they are called now!) thinks it was unlikely weight were fitted to the three rims without weights, just shows how incompetent some people are :o :?:

Thanks for your replies. I have only checked the fuse that in the manual refers to the 12v socket and the boot suspension switch. This fuse is under the dashboard. Also, the same fuse according to the manual works the front elec windows which are ok. Is there a secondary fuse for the same circuit ?

I'm now certain I've narrowed down the starting problems on my ZX to a air leak into the fuel supply.

As long as the primer is pumped a few times before starting, the car states very quickly on all 4 cylinders with little or no smoke. After 15 minutes the primer bulb has softened again and you need to repeat the process to ensure a smooth...

I have a citroen xantia 1.8 dimension petrol p reg (96?) was just driving along and light on dashboard came up (oil pump light I think) brakes went bad and also suspension doesn’t rise. I believe the back won’t come up off the ground like its ment to. Do I need a new oil pump to fix it or is it something else? i have a second similar xantia aside...

If it was wet when it happened it could be water on the pump drive belt making it slip, if the problem has remained the belt could be slack + what stempy said.

having recently purchased another xantia diesel :) was surprised to find the MPG very low, 36mpg. have changed the air and fuel filters and done the mpg again and still get 36mpg :( The previous xantia same engine 1.9TD managed 44-48mpg doing the same journeys. so was expecting the estate to do slightly less but not 36mpg. Did you mention 20 seconds intervals in the ticking? That's extremely low, you should refill/substitue the acc sphere.
One thing: is it possible that you have non HA spheres in your car? They would sure give it a soft ride!

The water actually does run through the manifold though. It goes in via a hose underneath the manifold (only one hose there!) and flows through the manifold into the engine. (I just took the head of a 306 tu3, same engine, and noticed it) but this is definetly not the only place water can flow into the engine so the guy doesn't make much sense....

Evening to all. Have any of you guys and girls heared of the airbag G sensor. Im told that if the car decelerates within a set limit (i.e like a crash situ) then this G sensor triggers the airbag. Where abouts is the sensor on a 1995 Xantia lx. Thanks all the same - Alex.

Hi again mates, my zx 1.4 motronic has a little problem in the ignition. With the light sun on the car at 30 celsius degrees the car can't start, i hear nothing and then i swith the key off and then ignition and the car starts with no problem, what can be wrong here?
