Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Hi Folks,

I've got a fair idea but some reassurance would be good please........

1989 BX 16v with a non functioning heater. i.e. - it doesnt blow at all.

Is it likely to be total failure of blower unit?

Or possibly failure of the old chestnut PCB heater control thingy.

All advice and tips on how to tackle the job welcome.

If the heater causes the temperature to drop, it means that there's enough water passing through it, and therefore you don't have too much air in it, and it's not an air bleed that will cure the fault.

Could you now buy all the UK XM's for the cost of 1 C6?

Sadly I think they need a top model with 2 more cylinders if they are going to achieve sales sucess. 200 odd BHP and 1.9tonne is going to mean 0 - 62 of about 9 secs and a max which may be around 145 if its clean which may be adequate but doesn't cut it with its competitors.

Hi mates, as i told you a couple of months ago, i rebuild my engine, tu3 1.4 motronic zx, the question is i've done 1750 miles and i wanna know when can i have the full potential of my motor,i'm still doing the breaking in and at every 300 miles i rev it up 500 rpms starting from 3000 rpms at the begining of the breaking in and touch the throttle...

I believe in drive it hard, but get it warm from day one.... Eg: my CX was a demonstrator from new (CNAN plates) and would have had the sh!t thrashed out of it from day one ... basically 00000miles. It's now about to hit 140,000miles doesn't use a drip of oil or coolant between changes. Not bad for a 20year old turbo charged car !!

Hullo,

Set sights on some MK2 Xantia electric seats. I own a MK1 Xantia and wonder if the electrical connectors below the seats are the same for MK1 and MK2.

Anyone have an idea? Anyone with MK2 Xantia with electric seats would be sweet to peep under their drivers seat and see the connector perhaps? :lol:

I prefer the Leather electric on the Mk1 to the Mk2 ... better shape, adjustable side cushions and in the rear, the head restraints are lower profile to the front in the Mk1 which makes a big difference to visibility thro' the rear window.

Battery run down over weekend, breakdown guy says it won't start because the immobiliser light is on and it (alarm?)needs resetting.I didn't think it had an immobiliser.
New battery init now.
Car is now halfway down street and neighbours don't look happy.
Is this a garage job or is there something quick I can try to get out of jail?

Hi,

I seem to have some problems with the hydraulics in my '93 Xantia (non-activa, no anti-sink, single output pump, 215000km).

A bit of history:
I bought it a year ago. It worked fine, a bit slow to rise and sank a bit faster than it should, but otherwise fine.

Shortly after, I changed the LHM, which was a nice green, for Hydraflush and...

I presume you took the hose off in the process of trying the other clamp? If so you probably let some air in the pipe, thus the difficulty getting it to prime at first.

As for the clip, Jubilee clip may not be the right kind - over here we don't call them that, we just call them hose clamps , and they are made of stainless steel, have...

Am in the process of replacing rear discs and pads - had intended to put new pads in but there appears to be enough wear to jusitfy renewing the discs aswell.

The problem I have is how is the disc fixed to the hub - according to the Haynes Manual it is held on with a securing screw - WRONG, there is not securing screw on the...

Agree with Kowalski - a locating stud. I've just done same on my '98 Xantia est. I was expecting the usual cross head screw but it was the locating pin. It didn't take much to move it, can't remember if I used a small spanner or mole grips.

Its that time again, I need to renew discs & pads on the ZX. I'm going to renew all round & am wondering what the best combo would be?

I have heard that Greenstuff pads are not that good & that normal vented discs are the way to go over grooved / drilled, as my ZX is only a 1.4 at the mo.

Whilst changing the glow plugs on my Xantia I accidentally broke the three way cooling hose on top of the engine. It is the hose assembly with the bleed screw cap. I broke it while attempting to prise it of the spigot behind the injector pump (sound familiar?).

The problem is I cannot source a replacement hose.

I ordered one from the Citroen...

Finally fixed it. Using the hose from the dealer and an adapter plate (citroen call it a lock plate) for the outlet on the offside side of the head. Hi 2 questions regarding the bx 16v XU9J4 engine.

1. Just been reading the Haynes BOL and it states that pre 1991 16v's can only run on 97 RON Leaded petrol. Is this true? The engine in my Visa came from a 1990 BX and ive been running it on 97/98 Unleaded! It does have a ported head so it may have had different inserts fitted but im not sure....

Thanks for the replies. Just had a look at the 309. It was only the first 30 secs of so that it needed a bit of help idling. Dont think I will go for it though (its on ebay) as it may not last long term. He said it used to suffer a lot from low oil pressure on long corners which is what they can do and so he replaced the oil pump and also the big...

Luke, whilst I can't claim to have literally taken my car to France for servicing, I have however availed myself of their services as i have a ruin of a house in Britanny. My BX was getting a bit long in the tooth for the frequent and long journey(I go there via the Chunnel so its 400 miles) but it was much too nice (still is) to sell for peanuts...

I'm trying to remove the rear wiper motor from the tailgate. But, I can not make out how to remove the motor from the tailgate body. The problem is that I was expecting it to be bolted to the body, but it is fixed with some strange hollow bolts with no heads, the only thing they have is 3 slots down the centre (120 degrees apart) looks like it...

I never realised you could get such large pop rivets 7.5mm.
The local garage did not even have a pop rivet gun for this size of rivet, so I assume they are not widely used yet. They had to borrow one from the lawn mower service shop next door!

Does anyone know for sure if a pair of front suspension struts (the actual strut section, not the strut top) from a series 2, 2001 Hydractive 2 Xantia will fit a series 1, 1997 Hydractive 2 Xantia ?

Are there any other variations other than whether its Hydractive 2 or not, and other than the two different sizes of droplink mounting...

Looking round at ZX 16v brake discs (see my other post) there seems to be two different disc sizes, are these different front / rear or are they bigger fronts on the later models etc? (I know there were 2 different power outputs) if this is the case, will the bigger discs fit the smaller carriers without modification?

The 167bhp ones may have had the bigger discs but I still dont believe any were sold in this country as they only came out in mid 96. One bloke said 15 were and ive had 3 people tell me they owned one. One wouldnt send me a photo, 2 did and they were 150/155's as given away by inlet manifold

Well im still on the prowl for a stereo for my 1996 Xantia which means it has to come out of the Mk1's so the steering wheel controls are still compatible.

Apparently this has steering wheel controls and ive asked if it has a black din connector at the rear for the use of a cd changer which he has replied as 'YES', he also states that it has come...

I am trying to get the Rear ABS Sensors off the Series 1Saloon,

I have unbolted them, and got the sensors out of the arms. My only trouble now is finding where the sensors connect to the loom under the car.

As mine is off the road and cannot be raised, i am having difficuly finding them.

Any help is appreciated.

if you've actually managed to get the sensors out of the arms, you've done the wosrt part already - thats usually a real s*d. The cables are probably shot as well - they usually go on the the rear of the XM so I wouldn't bother trying to retain them.

Had a problem this morning when starting the synergie its the 2.0 hdi 99' i think :? i think its just time for a new battery i jus wanna check its nothing else basically it just ran the battery down after about 6 seconds on trying to turn it over in the end i had to jump start it off the uno and still it didnt go after about 4 attempts evenutally...

The battery sounds like the problem. Modern batteries are capable of delivering enough current to start the engine until they have lost most of their capacity, but it takes a cold morning to show it. Jump starting will never be as efficient due to the voltage drop along the leads, so you wouldn't expect it to start as well. The 'clattering' would...

Hi, sorry for being off topic here, but someone on here must had to change a Ford Focus headlight bulb, passenger side. A girl at work needs it doing, had a quick look, it looks a bit of a nightmare. No room behind due to the battery being there. #-o

If the Focus is like any modern car, replacement of headlamp bulb will be a pain! For example:-

C5: partially remove front bumper
New shape Relay: remove headlamp, invoicing time 1 hour!
Late Xsara: n/s would be a doddle, but for the ABS block being in the way...
C3: very tight for room

Surely headlamp bulb replacement should be an easy job?...

Was talking to some friends who have an L reg Xantia which nobody has succeeded in fixing. Apparently the back goes up, front doesnt. Sounds simple enough!

A local garage who advertise as cit specialists had it for a while but apparently couldnt do anything.

Its a 1.6(?) petrol saloon.

I will ask the owners to log on here to see the replies....

Girlie's motor is a 1.0 AX. It gets serviced once a year regardless of mileage (only basic stuff even then unless anything else required for MOT), invariably has little oil in the engine and gets thrashed down the M40 fairly often.

We took it to Cambridge at the weekend and apart from the horrible, horrible pedal position which gave me leg-ache,...

Hi Guys,My Xantia TD is running okay, except that the water temperature isn't getting too hot, therefore I only get luke warm air when I turn the heater on.
Now my guess is that the thermostat is knackered, am I right?
The needle on the gauge used to get to the middle line and stay there, now it doesn't reach so high!
I have flushed the system...

I think you'll find there has been a retrospective modification of the thermostat at some time since production. I've removed 92?degree stats from both of our cars and the replacements have both been 82 degree ones.

At MOT i have been advised that the front suspention is a too hard. How do I adjust or cure this 'problem'?

Got and advisory for hard rear suspension at MOT, still some movement so not a fail but clearly the spheres were on the way out. Just depends how you define hard.

My chaps now gone computeriser and I suspect on some things they are limited to what they can enter on to the system.

How do I tell which type of suspension I have on my Xantia 1.9 th 1995?

If it's LX or SX spec it will have just 'ordinary' suspension. If it's a VSX or Exclusive, it will have Hydractive, and there will be a button next to the handbrake to switch between Comfort and Sport mode. It won't be an Activa, because that only came with the 2.0 Turbo Petrol engine in the UK.

Having investigated the Gloplugs, because of progressively more difficult starting at lower temperatures, it appears that nos 3 & 4 are both open circuit.

Advice on how an earth you can get at them to change them please.

Do they unscrew relatively easily or do they seize?

I would guess that these 2 are the failures because in the past somebody...

Smart tip, put rags into both the inlet manifold opening and turbo hose to prevent the possibility of a very expensive sods law occurence!

Even smarter tip: after inserting said rag into the inlet manifold DO NOT crank the engine :oops:

fortunately, it was only a piece of kitchen paper, and after some agressive cranking I got it to start,...

There is a resonance noise in my ZX when I accelerate in first and second gear and then, when I have reached my cruising speed, it (almost disappears).
There is also a rather heavy CLONK from somewhere under the rear part of my car whenever I start the engine.
These sounds appeared quite suddenly when I was out driving, suddenly they stopped for a...

...and the car seems like new to me! :) All the strange noises and tiny vibrations are totally gone (with the added bonus of that I can actually hear my rear loudspeakers very well now!).

Wilkobob informs me that this has the XUD engine in it, just wanted to confirm that this is the case as the brother in law is still in need of a car and these seem cheap!!!!

Yep its got the XUD - 1.8 turbo and 1.9 NA. I went to look at one (418 - the saloon) and was that pleased with it I bought it :P . Make sure that the shocks are ok (the cars weak point) as well as the normal checks of HG failure and cambelt changes on the XUD. Hope this helps - Alex.

Hi - have come here for your expert help!

I have scrolled through the topics, and although I suspect this one has been raised, I couldn't see it !

On my partners synergie - the immobiser keypad code needs changing. One of the numbers on the pad is not working well when pressed.

Any ideas on how to change it. Bought it second hand earlier this...

I finally seemed to sort my aircon/headlights/screen demister problem yesterday by replacing the No. 2 fuse in the Auxiliary fusebox.

I noticed something unusual though, although the vehicle handbook DOES say that the fusebox is 'depending on equipment and country', it says in the handbook that the No. 2 fuse is a red (10 amp) fuse.

Modern cars usually come with fully welded exhaust systems from the factory - when a part needs replacement you use an angle grinder and cut it at the appropriate place and slot in the replacement section. On the other hand if your'e going to keep the car for a reasonable time it would be worth fitting a stainless system.

Please help
My Xantia 1.8td has an intermitant fault with the hedater motor & heated rear screen not working.
I have checked for loose wires, all fuses, earthing points near battery, shacking ingnition switch, all without success.
Read onthe forum about bypassing the ignition switch with a shunt relay, does anybody have the instructions for this...

Morning all

Car is a 51 plate and about 1 third of the central display on the dashboard seems to have lost the will to light up! Is it lit by bulbs, LEDs or some other magic? and can u just pop the front off and change the bulb?

i think he means the clock display in the centre of the dash. there are 3 normal dash bulbs in it,to remove use 2 plastic levers to lever the top bit down then pull the surround out (it can be quite tight) once that is removed two T-20 screws hold the display in.

Hi one & all.

ZX 1.9TD that produces not heat whatsoever from any of the vents.

We've disconnected the pipes into the heater matrix & flushed them through ok, we've removed & tested the thermostat, works fine, we've drained, flused & refilled the rad & still no heat at all from the internal vents.
The rad is pretty much had it & is loosing water...

Ross, if you have double checked everything else, and then checked it again - - - - yep.. dash out. :( it may be usefull if you take lots of pics as you remove stuff, that way you can check where it was if you get stuck putting it all back again.. :?

from what I have read, its a long, time consuming job, so you need to be very patient and...

1998 Xantia 1.9TD

She picked the lads up from school, as she started the car it was really rattly, she came to a tight left hander and the steering wouldn't go far enough so she had to take a wide sweep around the corner. When she got to our house it wouldn't go into reverse and she says the brake light is on all the time ( no abs so I'm not sure...

When the belt went last week I resolved to not spend any more money on it and to trade it in, anyone buying it only has to search for all my posts to find it's history on here.

I removed the pulley, carefully prised out the oil seal at the back, cleaned the old dried up grease out with parafin, repacked with Castrol HMP and drifted the seal back...

Just noticed on tick over that when I press the brake pedal on my Blingo I can hear a hiss? Doesn't do it every time and brakes seem to operate normally when driving. Could it be a servo leak ? .....any thoughts !

This is a little plea for help from one of you UK chaps, I'm trying to get hold of one (or two depending on the price) of the little plastic/nylon balljoint linkage clips that go from the rollbar clamp to to the height corrector mechanism on a Xantia. (Front one specifically, and a spare back one if the price is good)

yes andrew thats the one N10126,i have modded one of these to go in a CX pork chop as its exactly right outer diamiter but needs to have a bit choped off both sides,i have not tried it yet as i also bought a recond porky chop from stan platt,the only thing i can see is the rubber is not quite as firm as the original CX bush,but that might be just...

See i think that is fairly 'normal', the wheel arch (looking straight at level) to the panel was about 20mm ish too high above the wheel, which the majority on here felt it was far too high and even more so the front, so was lowered the other weekend, and the wheel arch (outside end, lip) is pretty much on the tyre if not a little further down...

When I'm driving at 70+ and turning round a long bend my steering looses its stiffness and is very scary. I'm sticking to 60 whilst I see what's wrong. Any ideas? First thing in the morning it goes very stiff (no jokes please) just after starting but I put this down to the pressure the system is under when first started.

What is the voltage on stop solenoid. I undid injector line behind the pump and THERE WAS NO DIESEL coming out of there. Then I checked the voltage on solenoid with ignition on and i had only very small voltage (0.06 V) on the feed. Can i run direct feed from the battery to start the engine? This is lucas pump.

One will be the over temperature warning light and the other the cooling fan switch, I think! It isn't actually the thermostat housing as the thermostat is in the return pipe at the back of the engine.

Sad, a really nice guy - I met him once when he visited my College Industrial design course as part of a feature for 'Car'. Chatted briefly about my sad obsession with Citroen's!!
