Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me with my xantia. Brakes started to grab and bind and when I looked in the reservoir the fluid was bubbling away like mad. I then tried to bleed the brakes and the fluid came out like guinness!! System is getting loads of air in it somewhere but I have run out of ideas on the problem. Can anyone help??

I'm not familiar with the Xantia, but had a BX a few years ago. I would assume the only place for air to get in is going to be on the suction side of the system, which is going to be between the reservoir and the hydraulic pump.
If you are happy with the condition of the pump and have renewed the feed pipe (may be worth checking the pipe clips...

I concur with Richard, just to add that the MK2 rear seat head resraints are the same as the front seats and therefore are effective in reducing visibility thro' the rear window.... the MK1 had smaller head restraints and in my opinion were better. I would also say that having owned both MK1 and MK2 Leather seats I prefer the MK1 for the head...

Hi The temp gauge on my Xantia estate 1.9td 1996 stays around 70 degrees and the heater is only warm at its best, will it be the thermostat that will need replacing, and if so how easy / hard is it to replace the thermostat. i have also checked for air locks in the cooling system but none found ...any advice will be appreciated...thanks Colin

Hi folks

My ZX's upper engine mount has packed up. It has started making a small clunk when I accelerate / deccelerate fast. I don't know what consequences can this have if I leave it like that or do I have to replace it ASAP?

I've had the top mount on my BX TD fail twice - and to be honest never noticed any difference! (first time when I got it - then the replacement failed within about 20,000 miles! - no idea why)

Just a quickie (no funny comments),

Do the the MOT testers check under the gaiters of the front suspension legs.

I say this because today I found that the nearside leg appears to have weeped down the leg,but not pass the gaiter.You wouldnt know its weeping until you lift up the gaiter. 8-[

what revs are you doing at 70mph???

I need to know coz I'm chucking the engine in my vw campervan and need to rebuild my gearbox with ratios to match the engine rpm

I believe it was the clutch bearing and shaft which is the weak link in the vw box

Jamie Oliver does not have a porsche engine in his bus, he's just dumb when it comes to cars which he proved so well on his recent tv series when he filled the breather box up with oil :roll:

Hi,

I'm trying to find where on the engine to find the engine type code on a 2 litre 8 valve petrol engine from a Xantia. The Haynes book of lies says its next to the oil filter, but there is nothing there, and no recognizable code anywhere on the engine that looks like a type code.

On the chassis number plate on the left side of the engine bay...

I have a 95 TD Xantia and the rear suspension is stuck solid on high. It's also very bouncy when driven. When you adjust the ridse height the front goes up and down no problems, but the rear won't budge.

Has anybody got any ideas as to what this might be?

The link is too short because its meant to operate the height corrector and the height you've got your car at now is either too high or too low.

The height corrector ball should move but you're working against quite a strong spring and its at one if its extremes so you might not be able to move it by hand. The way I sorted this out the last time...

I'm a newbie and have just bought a C5 V6 with 80K on the clock. Reading through the paperwork it appears that a cam belt change is overdue.
It seems that I need to get the work done at a Citroen outlet and I need to spend in the region of £300 on parts and as much again on labour. Wth VAT it will cost a shade under £700!
Any advice would be most...

Someone here (sorry, can't remember who) recently mentioned that the idler bearings for some PSA engines are 'off the shelf' components, and can be replaced cheaply. Worth checking before buying new rollers.

The majority of ball bearings that you come across is a standard bearing, whether or not you can replace it with another standard bearing...

Hi,

I bought a xantia last year, 1.9TD SX, 1993, a good lil motor in fantastic visual condition, lots of service history....

1 month later the hydraulic lines split at the front, I was doing 70mph, stop light came on, car bounced, brakes barely worked but managed to get pulled onto the hard shoulder and sit and wait for the AA to take me home....

Just taken both linksd off o/s came no prob's, n/s required the bolt cut but job done in 30 mins including washing hands !!!!!

All you require is 18mm socket and some means of locking joint to remove nut, easy job.

Hello. I've got a ZX 1.9D that I'm using for spares. I'ts presently on axle stands with both driveshafts removed.

Does anybody know if it's OK to lower it back to the ground without the driveshafts fitted - will it damage the front wheel bearings?

I thought i would do citrobics on my Activa today, so i popped it into high, but when i dropped it onto low a massive load whistle came from the LHM tank, is this air in the system escaping? I did notice that when i first started the car and pressed the breaks i heard lots of what i think was air rummbling through the pipes (or LHM) to the rear,...

hi can anyone help !!

i have a 2001 xantia hdi 100k. all of a sudden the temp fault light is flashing along with the stop light on the dash. one thing i have noticed is that the lights stop if the heater is set to the off position.??? also the fans don't seem to work even with the aircon switched on !!!

many thanx to u all !! i changed the relays and just the same, but then i noticed the + connection on the battery was melting !!! it seems that the connection was loose according to auto sparks and this had caused the wires to melt !!!!!!!!

melted wiring all stripped out now and replaced with donor a donor cars loom.

all ok now no flashing...

Well went to have a quick look at a Xantia just purely to pass 5 mins of my spare time :lol: it was £1300 for an N-Reg with about 70k on the clock, automatic in SX trim, i decided to bounce the ends to compare to my Xantia as i dont really know how good my suspension is on mine for a comparision, I was shocked to find that the front especially was...

I would agree though that the rubber seal can grip ferociously tightly- the sphere should never be tightened more than light hand pressure only, about the same as an oil filter............and we all know how...

I recently replaced the drivers side drop link on my 1994 1.9d xant lx. I replaced it due to some knocking noises I was getting on the drivers side, whenever I went over a bump or drove over a fairly rough surface. Problem is, it didnt improve the noise. Add in Loose subframe, anti roll bar support bearing, engine mount, loose bumper and other trim just for starters.

Incidentally the handbrake cable should be secured so that it doesn't touch the wheel. I think this will sound a bit like a driveshaft joint failure if it contacts the wheel.

Now that my Xantia Activa is working correctly, i want to keep the miles down on it, currently doing around 1000 a month, for fuel and because its so special i want it to last longer!

So i am thinking a Xantia Turbo Diesel as a second car. Is it worth hunting for a VSX/Exclusive model for the Hydractive, or am i better off just getting an SX and...

Whether you think the extra expense and complication of Hydractive 2 is worthwhile or not is a matter of personal taste.

However if you already have an Activa look at it this way - Hydractive 2 is the same as the Activa minus the roll corrector and rollbar rams, so you gain many of the same benefits.

Hi

got a xantia 1.9td not been run for about 3-4 weeks started first time, but having done about 3miles down the road now ticks over / runs like a petrol that's missing - cuts out at idle. having very little experiance of diesels whats could be wrong / what should i be checking?

Hi Folks,

Is there a correct way to fitting an abs ecu from an electrical point of vew?I fitted a known good unit today after disconnecting the battery first and reconnecting the battery last.Is this incorrect ?
I say this because my abs still does not work.All the sensors are o.k (two are new) resistances within tolerance,dash lamps o.k.

I've got an awful knocking noise coming from the front of my 1993 ZX Diesel. It happens when I hit cats eyes etc. and it's a pain in the neck when I have to drive down a dirt track to work every day.

intermitantly my xantia tds (1995) makes a really loud screeching noise when starting off, it goes after a short while and stops if i go into neutral. I have heard this noise before on other cars too. It had a new clutch about a year ago.

you should be able to get one from most spares shops
But make sure it's the right one! There are several sizes used on various Xantia models. To make sure, there should be a code on the old belt (may be a bit faded), which is universal for all belt maufacturers.

When my windscreen washer bottle runs out of water my remote central locking starts working.

As soon as I fill it up and start using it again it stops working.

on the weekend i went to the biggest breaker i knew in bilston only to find the whole place has vanished and area sealed :(

This place www.citroenparts.co.uk as per previous message.... they dont use computers for stock control. They just know whre the stuff is. I've recomended them to guys at work. Mate has just had a quote for some work on his Xantia TD at a local garage £580 all in, but citroen parts said they could supply the parts for a mere £180 and fit them for...

Hi All,

My 95 xantia TD is pogoing down the road like a kangaroo and is to the point now where it's a liability to drive. I'm assuming new spheres are the order of the day as they've covered over 80k since last being replaced.

The reast of the hydraulic system is in good order with no leaks or unwanted noises. My question is, how many spheres...

The mechanism that operates the height settings is often binding at the back.
The area may need a good clean/lubricate, particularly a plastic link that operates the height corrector, when it doesn't fall off.

I have bought a '96 xantia td lx to use the engine in my vw campervan :roll: no laughing :roll:

I had fully intended to take off the diesel pump and it's ecu and replace with an all mechanical pump for my transplant but the ecu seems to only control very minimal stuff on the pump.
My question is how easy is it to isolate the ecu from the rest of...

Well jon - I suppose its only a matter of time till cars need re-booting like computers.
I drive an appalling computer controlled forklift made by a company who farmed their design out to a German car company who know little about industrial trucks. Its quite easy to confuse the computer (by moving off too soon after turning it on) and the thing...

Had to move house recently through no fault of my own and there isn't space for a garage which being a car lover is really eating me up,anyway,the XM is sitting out in all weathers(although we do put a cover on sometimes)and i've increasingly noticed a few niggly things happening,stop light on centre console staying on longer along with Hydraulic...

I have a large garage but the space is much to useful to keep a car in!. My XM stays out in all weathers, and although I must admit its the first one I have had that doesn't leak rainwater into the car, in all other respects it doesn't seem to have suffered.

i think the bottom engine mount of my zx is going as there is a certain amount of vibration when i firast engage drive and also there is a large rattle / clunk when i switch the engine off which makes me think that the engine is rocking forwards and backwards too much...

is there one set size for this bottom doughnut mount or do they come in...

To get out the rubber of the donut I used an electric trill with a 3 quatrer inch bit........took seconds, but made a mess of the drive! Then simply hacksaw out band. Make sure you don't burr the lining of the hole when you mangle out the old lining. The new one goes in fine as long as it goes in square. I had my wife the other side to tell me...

I can't see any reason why you couldn't toss it, but usually BXs with carbs need as much filtration as they can get or you end up with trouble due to this black powdery crap getting stuck in the carby jets.

I attempt to start this morning it refuses, it turns over feels like something is there, so i try again, adding a little throttle. it starts but will only continue with foot continually on the throttle, but even then it is very very lumpy as if running on 2 or so cyclinders. i notice smell, and murkey exhaust fumes from rear of car. Stop engine....

Sounds like it to me - you could confirm with a compression test - plugs may show something, does the top hose go hard when the engine runs - all the usual horrors!

Make sure the cooling system is thoroughly flushed - can you think why it may have gone - overheating or something - as you need to get it cured at source rather than just do the...

I seem to get all the luck with my citroen lately, the other week i had to swerve to avoid a massive flatbed that was hurtling up the road without right of way, muggins hits a new curb with stones on it and bang, then the jack dont work. Luckily a kind xantia driver stopped with a trolley jack.

In the end Active 8's advice of ringing Brodie engineering seems to be the answer. They are sending both inner Diapragms and outer dust seals. I already have retainer rings..

Wish my luck for MOT friday afternoon with no leaking corrector :lol:

worked first time, don't supose you know anything about heaters on them. The switch won't operate on the first and second settings, only works on the 3rd and forth.

seems like i have a break in the line that takes the water to the two windscreen water ejectors (or whatever they are called) also one of them is missing. A) are they easy to get hold of b) would this fail an MOT

In the cars handbook it says the unladen weight is 1361kg. Ive been checking on the interenet and some sites give the kerbweight as 1361kg. I have a C5 new shape 2.0 VTR.
Wonder if anyone has the same problem, put the heater on auto and drive 65 mph plus, and I get a cold draft blowing between the steering column and the panel above the pedals, hot air is passed through the foot vents and the side and window vents, just this very cold air cutting across my knees.

Hi folks,

Just a minor query here.
Upon renewing one of my rear abs sensors today i had to remove the spare wheel for better access to the sensor wiring.
I noticed that the spare wheel had ,what looked like the original speed rating sticker on the 'wheel' and that the tyre was totally unused and appeared to be the original michelin that the car...

Hi mates, my 95' 1.4 zx avantage can't start, when you switch the key to start the car can't start and i can hear a sound like a fan coming out the engine(not clicks, nothing,just like a fan rotating), and on the 5 or 6 try, the engine start, what could it be?the starter is ok, it is rebuilt with its solenoid, i started to look for a ignition...

This sounds like a problem I had a while ago.

The starter spins but the solenoid doesn't engage the drive cog onto the flywheel.

I managed to free the solenoid (it was stuck and not knackered) with a couple of sharp taps from a heavy hammer.

You could remove the starter motor and manipylate the engaging mechanism driectly, that may do it.

1.9d lx Xantia. Which way do you turn the crankshaft pully bolt to take it off (as you look at it). I just cant get it off!!!! :evil:

I have done this a few times (on BX's) using a 1/2 socket with a long extension bar resting on an axle stand close to the bolt.
Adjust the axle stand so that the extension is parallel to the ground, fix a breaker bar into the extension and then a 5ft + scaffold tube and lean on it.
Never failed ...............so far.

Not as exiting as using the...

Hi all , that time of the year again and my xantia hdi insurance is due , can
anybody recommend an insurance company that give out good quotes as my insurance company is putting up my premium again eventhough i,ve got 6 years claim free insurance and do very little mileage. :x :x :(

I have never figured out why the Xantia HDi is insurance group 13. My wife has a 306 HDi with alloys and all the boy racer bits and it goes like the wind, its group 5. Its a strange world :!:

The size and weight of the car have something to do with it, i.e. a Xantia is heavier than a 306 and will do more damage to anything that you crash...

I had new spheres fitted in december all seemed fine.

Yes. They had the tank out to clean so they must have changed the fluid unless they put the old stuff back in.

Did a good session of airobics this afternoon and it felt and sounded much better when I went for a drive so maybe there was just some air in the system somewhere.

I have a problem with the nearside indicator, it is on permanant. It did this about 15 months ago, but went off when I unlocked the car.
Now it stays on regardless of indicator stalk position or car locked or unlocked.I have had to disconect the battery.

Any Ideas.........

Have you tried resetting the system by turning on the ignition whith the doors closed and pressing the button to the right of the steering column, it looks like a horn with a cross through it. Hold it for 10 secs and the lights on the instrument panel light up if my memory serves me correctly

Hi there,

Just a quickie, this may be a stupid question and I think it is, but I had a guy tell me that the gearboxes from a 1.9TD and a 2.0i 8v Xantia (both L regs) are the same and are compatible, is it the ML5 box? That didn't seem quite right to me as I thought the torque difference between the two engines would require different setups....
