Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

I have a 1994 ZX 1.9D with power steering. The steering has recently started to feel a bit vague and reacts to the road surface more than usual.

With the engine off, rocking the steering wheel produces a definite knocking sound. I think this is coming from the passenger side end of the steering rack. If I reach in from above and grab the...

As a matter of interest I changed the lower engine mount on Sunday and removed the right hand driveshaft to remove the casting from the car.

With the driveshaft removed you get quite a good view of the hydraulic connections to the rack. I would fancy my chances of...

I've just bought a 1998 Xantia 1.9td sx estate as a second car. As its only a year younger than my Hdi and 60 k less miles at 112k, it looked a good buy.
It has been self maintained for 3 years so I think the first thing will be a good service and a hydraflush however there are a couple of things i might manage myself...

The thermostat directly controls the temp of the working engine coolant - which in turn feeds the heater.
Problem with a tired thermostat is that it will not fully close on cold/cool engine/coolant thus allowing a coolant flow when not needed. This make for longish engine warm-up period and then lack of demister heat when you need it at most.

My 18-month old radiator in my ZX Td has sprung a leak this morning. At £95 a time I'm going to try a leak-sealer before I replace it (I've already replaced 2 in the past!) There is a slight heater matrix leak too, so I'm hoping to cure both problems at once. This forum seems divided on leak sealers. I'll let you know what I use and how successful...

Fortes is not a trade only product, but it doesn't seem to be distrubuted very well. You can probably place an order some from your nearest car parts shop.. :)

If you get some some, drain and refill your system before you put it in, don't mix it with radweld... :shock: :(

1 HYDRAULICS: At first the stop light came on then went off - intermittently, checked fluid it's OK, but has a small leak (looks like rear height corrector, to be rectified) and the rear spheres are hard - due to be changed. Is it the accumulator sphere, as the car has only done 76K (V reg, FSH) and not the HP pump? The car when parked doesn't...

Generally the hydraulic warning light is illuminated by the safety valve AND the reservoir level switch - so your light goes off normally as the pressure rises and then comes on when the reservoir level drops as the fluid is fed into the system. The warning light will always light the stop light as well.

Hello everyone

I am hoping to buy a Xantia Hdi soon and would appreciate a bit of advice

1) How can I tell a 110 version from a 90?
2) I would like a lowish mileage (60k) but have heard that at this mileage Xantias often need a bit of work. So what would I be looking to have been done.
3) Is there anything particular to the Hdi to be aware of...

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about the spheres - if they need doing, it's a good price negotiating point, and they're cheap and easy to replace.
Timing belt's another matter though - the recommended replacement intervals vary, but 60k is about due for replacement to be safe. I'd budget for a new one unless there's hard evidence that it's...

Hi,
I have a problem with another 95 Xantia!
This one, which doesnt have aircon, has a blower motor that periodically works (about once in twenty times) when you turn the ignition on, but as soon as you start the car, it stops, and no amount of swearing, switch fiddling will coax it back into life!
Any bright ideas?

:( Tensioner arrived and fitted.Piece of cake.The bad bit:- GSF supplied a 6PK1130 drive belt that does not fit.Their listing shows it as the correct one.I have measured it with the old belt and there is a 10mm shortfall on the new belt.The only way to fit it is with the top alternator bolt removed.Anybody else had this problem. Cheers.

apparently previous owner suffered an alternator pulley problem and the AA organised a botch repair at a motorway service area.Clearly this is why the 1130/1132 belt does not fit.Just been and got a s/h alternator from breakers and the belt fits a treat.Was able to fit the pulley with alternator in situ.

....Since the car is going at the end of this week.

Last night had a guy from Lincoln come and look at the car, we took the car out and he drove normally and the odd gear shift down into 4th at speed...certainly nothing out of the ordinary for me and for me to be concerned.

Just been told that both the gearbox mount and the lower engine mount need changing. Gearbox one had been knocking for nearly two years (only when hard on brakes / and then on acceleraor).

Also - clutch has been juderry for a long time - needs changing now - as gearchanges are getting notchy.

Other problem is one of the rear calipers - hand...

Hi, I've not long bought a 95 Xantia 19TD, recently I've noticed the rear window heater and the heater blower stops working when the engine is started. I've looked around and seen this is quite a common fault, do I need to replace the ignition barrel or is there a fix for this.

I have done this mod (RichardW) and can confirm it works well. I began to have the odd intermittant failing of the heater blower but since the mod I have had no more problems. I used a 30A fused relay I had laying around from an old spot light installation. Although there isn't a lot of room left for the extra relay, I managed to fit everything in...

Although my xantia does start eventually, it runs rough when cold and moreoften than not will cut out if left to idle or after a couple of hundered yards. It will start first time and run perfectly if you prime the system first using the hand priming pump.

Well in the end I had all the fuel hose replace from tank to engine and all pipes in the engine bay.
Start first time, every time now. So somewhere along the line there myst have been some perishing/cracking.

Let me explain..... When the suspension et chad raised and it time to drive off. I change gear and the car keeps reving??? Its like the auto choke ?? etc is causing the revs to rise. Bit dangerous as I have to brake to slow th ecar down afte rchanging gear. Stops after a few mins..

The starter on my V6 is becoming a little tempramental, if sometimes just goes Clunk. So far it always turns over on the second or third attempt. From the size of the clunk, I am sure that the solenoid is throwing the dvrive into mesh, but either the brushes are worn/sticking or the main contacts in the solenoid are not closing.

Oh dear! If you still have pressure in the system after the engine has cooled down, you have head gasket leakage. It doesn't necessarily mean its about to fail and its perfectly safe to drive until it starts blowing the coolant out of the header tank vent. Just keep an eye on your water level and temperature gauge. Gasket leakage in itself wont...

after working on my 96td xantia today i had the suspension on high but when i dropped it down it wouldn't come back up, so i got some lube on the height corrector linkage (the plastic ball joint appears to be ok) and worked it with the pliers but now its stuck on its highest setting, if i pull the lever back with the pliers i can get the back end...

If its an aftermarket radio and its always been the case then the secondary permanant 12v supply PeterN mentions may never have been connected up.

If its just started to do it, have a look at the connections on the back of the radio (or its housing) and check with a meter or a test bulb that there are...

Yesterday I was told by a Bosch Authorised repairer that they stopped doing remaps as they alter boost pressures, fuel pressure and fuel quantity etc. They only recommend boxes which only affect volume of fuel and not boost or fuel pressure.

Page 1B:13 Shows the tightening of the aux drive belt on a 19 l engine, but on the same page it shows a different way of tightening it, which requires jacking the car up, taking the wheel off and going in from underneath.

There is no way from the bonnet/engine compartment, your choices are from directly underneath with wheel on or (easiest) through the wheel arch with wheel off.

Took the Xsara for MOT yesterday feeling quietly confident despite presenting the £10 off voucher before the test.
Was rather miffed when I was told all 4 of the indicators were too white but he was probably correct. To avoid failure & retest I let them change the bulbs. Sure enouigh the amber coating had flaked quite a bit off on all of them....

I have an AX 1100 autograss car,which,apart from the cylinder head which is off the 1360 GT,and has twin 40 DCNF Weber carbs on,is basically a standard Saxo lump at the bottom.It has only 2 gears in the gearbox,and is run on 175x70x13 tyres.

You probably need some video codecs installing as they're probably using divx or xvid codecs.

I'd suggest downloading and installing a program called 'ffdshow' which bundles together a whole bunch of codecs and features... I've found it to be...

Did this happen or was it still only on VSX models? Parkers guides (uk) mentions nothing of hydractive 2 on the facelift models. Any info would be great.

Hydractive was definately only fitted to VSX and Exclusive models in the UK .

But, Citroen had a nasty habit of supplying different spec on the same model in a different country. It is possible that a grey import SX, or private import SX, even one sourced on the continent (but RHD) may have a foreign spec.

I have 2.2 SX and I am wondering how long should it take to clear windscreen of frost in the mornings.Outside temp -6c to -4c.
when I press the switch for the windscreen the fan almost stops, It then increases in speed as the engine warms up. I usually have to clean the windscreen with a scraper.

I would guess at about half an hour, if at all.

There's nothing faster at clearing ice than a scraper (and a good pair of gloves).

Heated front windscreen comes close but AFAIK Citroen don't do them.

right left it over night and bingo works fine.
The car now really has a nasty cough, that has got worse, to the extent that this evening it wouldn't tickover & while cranking it backfired. I'm hoping its just a fueling problem as I haven't got the power connected to the lambor, I'll get another look at it Tuesday

I've got a 96 19.td lx xantia estate here and it's been giving me problems all the time and now this one really takes the biscuit. Any advice would be appreciated.

but you'll only know once it's been standing for a while, to see if it sucks in some more air.

If it is reluctant to start again once stood overnight, then you now know the problem... just have to find which union is allowing air...

according to the haynes manual there are two types of tensioner pulleys on the xantia, the later models had an self adjusting tensioner (spring loaded maybe?), but the older types (pre99 models, or pre facelift) needed to be done manually, there are pics in the haynes manual.
Who here thinks you could use the self adjusting one on the older...

I set my alarm with the fob on my 1.9d avantage and now it won't let me disable it, i can disconnect the battery to silence the noise but how do I disable the immobiliser and then I can throw the goddamn fob thing in the bin and just use the key.

Today I started to investigate a knocking noise in my steering. This was cut short by a snow blizzard but not before I'd determined that at least one of my strut top bearings is noisey.

In the GSF online catalogue they list a part N45710 - Strut Top Bearing at £7.95 for PAS cars. They also have a part...

My xantia passed its mot today to my great suprise.I was all geared up to recieve the fail paper when I went to pick up the car because for the last week I've been trying to solve my abs problem on the the car.The abs just doesn't work and I was sure the mot tester would fail the car alone on that,but alas as I said it sailed through...

Trying to track down some tracking/centering problems with Dad's Xantia, and I've just noticed on the full body wheel alignment report that he had done some time ago that the caster angle is only 1 degree, and it should be 3 degrees.

According to the Citroen data (which I don't have in front of me to confirm at the moment unfortunately)...

Yes the Xantia has passive rear steering. My guess is it is the bushes that are worn, but I don't know how to establish if thats the case or not, other than by suck it and see....(and he doesn't have a lot of money to throw around on what is only an educated guess so far)

Okay, I first posted this on Andyspares.

My drivers door lock just 'spins' in the lock, nothing will make it work. I've removed the grommet and tried tightening the hex screw in case it was loose.

Now I've heard that its a common problem for the locks to wear out, necessitating a replacement of the barrel.

Many thanks Mandrake, I tried this today and it worked. I don't really know what I did, but its possible one of the tiny ball bearings wasn't in its right place. Whatever, prior to dismantling, the plastic clip at the end of the mechanism wasn't turning, after reassembly it was.

Trying to remove the RH D/S from a 306 HDi - got the bolts loosened but they won't turn or go back through the housing. Got about 1/4 of play in the shaft through the housing but then it just goes solid. Any clues how to proceed?

Got it out :P . Appliance of a bit of science rather than just brute force, and it came out quite easily. Bolts are bent as a nine bob note.... Hope the bearing is OK....!

Hi Everybody,
Just a quick question from a newbie. The brake pedal on my 95 Xantia suddenly dropped to a much lower position than normal today. I had a look in the haynes manual and it mentions a return spring. Are they talking about the plastic pushrod/cylinder thing on the back of the pedal, or is there supposed to be an actual spring...

Many thanks for the info, I've had another look at it today and as far as I can see nothing has dropped off or appears to be in the wrong place so the plastic cylinder looks to be the most likely culprit.

Car (1998 Xantia 2.1td facelift model) was an absolute pig to start this morning. At –3 it was colder than it has been for a while. Lots of cranking, clouds of white smoke out the back and after about 5 mins it finally ran. Bit lumpy at first but soon sorted itself out once it was running. Have to agree with Reggie - when I changed the glowplugs on my ('93) 2.1 XM it became rather apparent that the inlet manifold had to come off. This only took an extra 10 mins and made the whole job laughingly simple . . (Bosch mechanical pump!)

I also had some trouble with the glowplug relay a number of years ago - one cold morning the pig...

i put in the wrong code on my xantia 1995 TDS-LX. And it would never let me re-enter it. in the end i disabled the battery for 5hrs, (wouldnt do it if it was just 5 mins), turned off the alarm, then re-entered the code and it worked fine.

from what many of you have said the squealling noise i sometimes get when starting off in low gear may be related to the tension or wearing of the above. Can i confirm as i cannot find a mention of one in the Haynes, that this is what is known i many other cars as the fan belt? Or am i way off?

Also any idea how much it costs to buy an new one....

1. I'm looking to buy a long hose to bleed the brakes directly back into the reservoir tank, do you know the diameter of the bleed screw? or the diameter of the hose itself, same.

it is a manual adjust type i think you may be right about the adjustment
i tried adjusting it so that it was about same height as brake pedal but it would not disengage the clutch so i kept adjusting it until it did disengage the clutch it is now about an inch or so above brake pedal height and seems to be working properly i will...
