Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

GRRRRRRR.....

The engine light on the missus car has come on. The manual says something about it being Fuel Injection / Environmental Systems error. Basically it's the little engine light...

Any ideas what this is likely to be, or is it a Citroen Only jobbie....

Well, got the new part fitted today. Initally left the battery off for about 15 minutes (that's all the job took) and the engine light was still on. Decided to leave the battery off for 2 hours as suggested and it worked. The light is now off, and the job sorted.....

Cost less than £60 including buying the part, and a socket to do the job... much...

Depending on the engine and year, you may have to remove a heat shield from above the transverse rear silencer. It's held by two small bolts that screw into the transverse crossmember at the bottom and by clips at the top. here goes... on the pressure regulator i see four bolts. two top, two bottom ones, which one is the bleed valve, i'm guessing the top one further from the sphere?

so the procedure is... , put steering wheel on full lock to the right, loosen sphere ( crack ) with suspension on highest first, then lower suspension with engine running, when lowest...

maybe use some rubber on it, for grip, and tighten the handle as much as u can without wrecking the thread, then a bar over the handle and again bob is deffo ur uncle. might try that soon, i'll try lots of techniques and report on which one worked for me

It's me , the girl , again ! Battery got sorted , even the stereo got sorted but now i got a bigger problem.

I just went to collect my son and the steering wheel has become extremely stiff. Very hard to turn past 20degrees or so. It was awful trying to get round the roundabouts my wrist hurts so bad now. Also i noticed that the battery...

hi all, i am replacing both bushes on the suspension arm of a 405. I normally get someone to do this for me but have stupidly tried myself. I am confident I can remove the rear bush. But have began by tackling the front one. It is three metal cylinders with rubber sandwiched between them.

I have got rid of the inner 2 cylinders with some hard...

I did things two ways on my old 405. At first I just bought the bushes - the bushes had marks for where to align with the old arms. Very good, but a pain to align.

Later, the front bushes needed doing, and the easiest option was to replace the whole arm (with bushes pre-fitted). The rears were pre-mounted at a similar angle to the original...

Mine got so bad that it would leave the road!!!! I had this problem and changed the front spheres. It cost about £50 from GSF and the difference was instantly noticable. The idea was to do the others later (as they are more difficult). If you think flat spheres is the cause then search this site as there is loads of info on how to change them...

i used to swear by the seat leon tdi which my work uses a lot but now i am converted - i havnt seen a car as inovative and technologically advanced as this for ages.

Hi All,
Just noticed LHM oil coming from suspesion strut top;- see pic link;

Is there a seal between the top of strut top and the black rounded bit underneath ?, and if there is, can it be obtained seperately. Bloody Cits, just when you think all is quiet, they rear up and bite your bum. :(

I thought it would be worth recording here how I managed to align bolt holes when installing a front suspension arm purchased from Andyspares. It came complete with rubber bushes.

At first sight the rear rubber bush was at a most unfriendly angle - so the bolt could not be aligned.

After a few skinned knuckles, the solution I found was to use...

I'm not convinced that the gear ratios on the xsara HDI are quite as well chosen as those on the zx 1.9D or at least don't seem to suit the power output characteristics of the engine quite so well - but I'll stick at it. It may just be that this is such a different beast to what I'm used to!

hi every one i wonder if any one can help me if the battry was taking off the car a few times would that alter the setting on the ecu at all as the car seems to be very heavy on derv i am only getting 110 miles on a half of a tank of diesel there is no leaks the brakes are not sticking changed the air filter and fuel filter the car runs ok there...

My hdi about the same milage , does about 450 miles to 1/2 way mark then 150 on the bottom half . I can get from hastings in sussex to merthy in wales on just a quarter tank , on the way back takes 3/4 of the tank , just shows you how bad the gauges are . You just need to get use to the gauge setup .

Gents, A little help please with a problem diagnosis with the parents in law's car.

Car is a year 2000 Xantia HDI 110. It's developed a chirp intermittantly when the car is idling, or switching between power on / power off.

It's been to a ahem specialist, who has charged £250 ish for changing a gasket somewhere down the back of the engine (sorry...

If it were me and they've now fixed the real problem (and admitted it) I wouldn't be paying for that unneeded turbo....

Or as others have said, threaten with the small claims court...no way should you be expected to foot the bill for such a gross error in diagnosis.

Folks, I have still a braking issue with my xantia.

The brakes lock on with lots of power, then the pressure drops, builds, and the process repeats. Bearable in the dry, suicidal in the wet!

I have changed front accumulator as per advice on this board. This fixed the suspension pressurising 'click' from being every 3 seconds to every 20-25.

Hello all,
I have re-occuring fluid leak from one of the hydraulic screw fittings that go into the distribution block(i think,where the accumulator sphere is?) can i depressurise the system and use ptfe or are the seals available from citroen or anywhere else?

I have found out that PayPal (Ebay) is currently having a security problem, the case seems to be if you pay by PayPal and then get a refund your Card Number (16 digit) is sent to the seller along with your address....Im not sure if this happens when you purchase something aswell or just when a refund is requested but it may be best to hold on any...

Could anybody tell me what sort of symptoms my 1.9d lx xantia would have if the timing was out on it? I recently replaed the cambelt on it (new car to me) and the car starts first time but it smokes like anything on start up together with lumpyness for about 30 secs (this only happens on 1st start of the day - fine other times). The car responds...

so why on earth do you drive a diesel engined car?

It may also have an effect on the emissions, so you're running a bit of a risk for the MOT.

.... and I'm sure when you loose 10-15mpg, you may want to get it timed properly.

Car is '98 Xantia TD. Problem is brake pedal has gone to the floor !! After driving home very slowly (luckily only a mile form home) using handbrake I found a plastic rod about 2'' long on the floor. It looks as if this has slipped off under the pedal ?

How is this supposed to be held in place ? Can't see in the dark but will have a look...

Had another look in daylight. The plastic rod has come apart leaving one end attached to the brake pedal (with the spring) and the end that goes into the brake valve had detached and fallen on the floor. I've put it back together and it's working as before but I can't figure how it happened and more importantly how to stop it...

Hi Everyone,

On my continuing quest to iron out all the bugs in the suspension of my Xantia I've found yet another small (?) problem which I wonder if anyone else has. (Even if they don't know it yet :lol: )

While working under the front of the car recently I noticed a hissing noise from the area of the pressure regulator after turning off the...

now its up to 12 seconds.

I wish! Engine idling, mine is more like 60 seconds. Even driving it takes 400m or so before it goes out. The valve dumps all the pressure from the system and the weedy 2 piston pump takes ages to pump it up again (think starting from flat).

Are you sure its the electrovalve

Pretty sure. Same clunk can be heard when...

Hi All

Well I've driven my LHD Xantia a few times now and I think, no I know there is something amiss, the dreaded accumulator sphere to start with
(I've bought a new one) but I could be wrong, why do I feel it's the acc sphere, well the clicking at times is only a few seconds apart but can be up to 30 sec's, done the high setting to low...

Some data on the older diesel engines...

The HDI 110 and the 2.1TD produce the same amount of power and torque, only the HDI does both at lower RPMS.

Googling turned this page up about the diesels...

It quotes the torque figures of the 1.6 HDI as 235Nm or 260Nm on overboost . Thats 173 lb ft or 191 lb ft on overboost.

I noticed last night a slight creak when turning the steering wheel of our blue Xantia. Today it has got much louder.
It creaks all the way from lock to lock. Although I can't really hear it under the bonnet with the engine running.
Anyone can put their finger on the prob before I get down & dirty with it?

BX's used to creak quite awfull from the steering wheel. This is caused by the underside of the steering wheel sliding against the plastic cowling underneath. Very annoying. Cure was to remove steering wheel and cowling, then slightly bend the 2 steel wings (holding the stalk switches) slightly downwards. (using a hammer :twisted: )

HI there, thought I would pass on my method for repairing the problem of Heater fan & rear screen not working. 1. remove lower cover behind steering wheel , make sure to break the plastic round the hidden screw. 2. remove the panel below the steering column. 3.unplug the three connectors, small screw and remove barrel and switch assembly. 4....

Hi all, I have play in my n/s balljoint and I am considering buying the removal tool and having a go myself. Is this a sensible move, bearing in mind I have to do the work on the driveway, or should I book it in and keep my fingernails and temper. Hi all, seeing this thread resurrected reminded me to report back... I did indeed buy the special tool to remove the bottom balljoint ( around 12 quid with p+p) . With the car supported on axle stands (and depressurised etc) It was immediately apparent that removing the hub assembly was going to make the job very much easier.. this only takes a...

My Citroen 2.1 TD XM VSX (N reg)has failed the MOT because the rear brakes have a delay. After working the brakes for a while they will start working. Has anybody experienced this?

The car is a 2.0 HDI 110 (2002 model)

Firstly, is it an easy job? I only have pads, discs and 4 caliper bolts (on advice from Cit).

Any hints and tips? Do you need a special tool to rewind the rear calipers, or will a square section bar or a G clamp do?

Can any one suggest a source for a CD with the genuine Citroen workshop manual. I have a Haynes for my ol petrol but am new to diesels and need the info. The Haynes at my local Halfords looked exactly like my old book.

I picked up one for my motor bike on Ebay for less than £3 and would like the same for an HDI Xantia? They appear occasionally on...

Many thanx for the replies on my previous post about steering pumps, That problem now resolved.
My wife now tells me that the brakes have been feeling funny last few weeks, Not doing the school run I wouldn't have noticed the brakes.

A friend of mine has a company lease Xsara Picasso, petrol with an autobox.

Its coming up to 3 years old and he has the option of buying the car from the leasing company. Despite its overall crappy build quality its a pretty good deal for him to buy it, BUT, its an auto and the transmission warning light keeps coming on.

Follow up to my previousPost subject: XANTIA HDI DEAD!

New rocker arms fitted, new Cam Belt & Tensioner fitted! All done without removing the head! Running a treat sounds great! Just waiting for the bill! I really thought the car would be uneconomical to repair.
Now I just need the cover from the Cam Belt as my ones got a big hole in it where...

Hi all,

There seems to be various options available these days to get a HDI chipped. Ranging from :-
- uploading a new map into the ECU by laptop...overwriting the original
- plug in devices under tha dash
- plug in devices on the loom in the engine bay.

Is this device a genuine re-mapper that does all the necessary tricks ( but can be removed...

The electric windows on my Xantia has developed a periodic fault; Occasionally both the left and right window refuse to move. Sometimes you can resurrect them by turning off and on the ignition. Non of the contacts work when it has it's moods. I'll have a look at the wiring diagram in my Haynes manual this evening and see if I can find a likely caurse. I presume the relay you suggest will be a good candidate if it feeds both windows.

1.8 16v, 2 up & in the wrong gear at the wrong time, coming off a roundabout and a knob in a blue vectra overtook on the chequred markings with a car coming the other way, 3 cars behind was a cop car & I so desperatly wanted to shut the door on him, but for whatever reason my brain failed to drop a cog & fire her up the rev range.

I currently drive around in a Xantia with a lazy pump and although it can elevate the pressure enough to extinguish the low pressure lamp in a few seconds, I have to turn the wheel to lock (blocking the flow through the FDV and the power steering) and rev it a bit to get it to rise in a reasonable amount of time. But sometimes the light comes on...

it is a shame there are no hydraulic monitoring on the xantia's, imagine how cool it would be to see the hydractive diagram on a little interactive display showing whats going on and what the pressures are, and what the regulators and correctors are deciding. i'm sure it can be possible, but a deep understanding of the hydraulics would be needed,...

My C3 have had a factory recall-mod where they put a bowel under the front spring to prevent it from shredding the front tyre in case of spring failure. I guess they only do this because they actually experience spring failures..

Besides from that, C3's seem to eat drop links. I had one done under warranty, and the garage told me this was fare...

Lets see how many others have seen this before!

Basically the Activa is showing the orange ECU light for alot of the time. It comes on when idling for a while, or if the engine is hot ie town driving.
It doesn't show when the car is cold, so first thing in the morning or on the drive home from work having been sat up for a while. But should I...

am i right in thinking that a flat accumulator sphere can make fuel consumption higher because the hydraulic pump driven by the engine has to work harder?

I think you'd find the effect on fuel consumption one way or the other would be miniscule. The pump is approximately 1.5HP under full load, and only runs intermitantly. Certainly far less than running the air-conditioning.

Hi All,

My Citroen constantly has this motor/pump noise whilst the engine is running, kinda getting on my nerves now. However, if you just turn the ignition on, you can here it for a few seconds and then it just goes away like a fuel pump priming. But soon as I start it, the noise comes on again and is there constantly.

Any suggestions?

The pump is at the rear, the filter at the front. Vibrations from the pump cause the filter to make the noise. Problems with the filter can amplify the noise.

ok you all know me by now, i'm paranoid, and daily find something wrong with my car, although it's the best i've had i want to keep it that way.

once in a while i feel also hear occasionaly some creaks coming from my steering when making a turn (i think one side, to the left more) but not on full lock, it's not a clicking like driveshafts do,...

My dad's Citroen Evasion is now sitting in the garage after being towed. The battery exploded the day before on some street upon my dad turning on the ignition. He's still in a trauma as it was scary experience. He's worried if he puts in a new battery and start again, the same thing might happen.

I am still having problems with my idle speed, cutting out, jumping etc with my ZX. After slowing replacing many parts - Stepper Motor, Coil, Ht Leads,
and checking for vacuum leaks. I am still no further. :cry:

But I feel i have narrowed it down to the Temperature sensor (ECU),or the ECU itself.

I have taken the green Coolant temp sensor...

the black canister is the charcol canister and is part of Evaporative Emissions Control. this is mainly used when the engine is hot as it burns off unwanted gasses. (i think) you can usualy feel the purge valve pulsing/clicking when the engine has warmed up.
