Wandering the web, I came across this:



It's a 1973 documentary called "Humain, trop humain" by Louis Malle.

Skill and boredom in equal doses. So many people, some doing such mundane things as placing washers on spigots, or simply turning a panel over. What stands out? The spray painters with no face masks breathing in the paint, the speed and deftness of the upholstery workers, the hammer - used in abundance!

I survived two weeks on a production line at Rootes, and that was two weeks too many.

Seeing the guys working away with a fag in mouth made me think when the last time I saw a worker do that... It was in 1991, when I bought a pair of new Michelins for my Dyane down at the local KwikFit. Both wheels off, tyres removed, tyres refitted with new valves, balanced and wheels back on and cigarette was only onced removed from mouth!

What got me looking for the whole documentary film in the first place was a seeing a clip of the lead loading taking place.

So labour intensive compared to all the robots building a shell today.

I think I may have had the other one

I liked the beginning with the nice looking woman driving the overhead crane - my son used to do that in a plant supplying cut steel sheet for the Nissan plant. I think they made a meal out of it though with her bringing the roll of steel the whole length of the factory when there was heaps of it nearby.
Place I work does tricks like that when we have visiting customers in, except it generally goes horribly wrong

Wasn't on the Imp line I'm afraid - I was underneath Commer Spacevans bolting up and connecting steering, throttle and rear shocks. Spent two weeks banging my head on lumps of metal. Best protection was a wooly hat!

I would have chosen the crane driving job - used to drive tower cranes on building sites for a while. Cushy number if you were fit enough to climb 100 ft or more four times a day!!
