Hi guy`s, can anyone assist please. My wife drives a Renault Clio mk2, phase 1, 2001 Y reg 1.2 with a mileage of approx. 72,000mls. A few weeks ago the car started to "judder and miss" (her words), this happens when the car is slowing down or when she accelerates. The car starts perfectly every time, albeit with a "run-on", a whirring sound from the alternator or starter? The car ticks over steadily at about 600 rpm.
I thought that If I bought an engine diagnostic code reader I would be able to interrogate the system, well I bought one off a well known auction site and connected it up; I had a message come up on the readout saying "unable to connect". This was supposed to be compatible with all 1998 and newer cars, but not it seems this one!
On searching various web sites for info on this it appears that there should be a label on the inside of the car door stating if the vehicle is OBD1 or OBD2, or EOBD, there isn`t, so if the Clio isn`t compatible with a code reader what else can I do. The Clio was serviced last February? and had new plugs, plug leads, coil and air filter, and I have cleaned the MAF sensor too.
Any ideas gratefully received.
Thanks.

Re: EOBD or OBDI 1 or OBDI2?
EOBD is just the European equivalent of the American OBD standards.
Generic code readers are never as good as the proprietary ones used by the car manufacturers, but in your case the car is quite early and only basic info will probably be available to be honest. You could send it back and try another brand, or bite the bullet and get Renault to diagnose it for you.

You shouldn't need to go to Renault with it. Any independent should be able to do it.

What is the official Renault code reader called? Is it (or a clone) available on the aftermarket?

Renaults use the Can Clip.
Some here on eBay
Also EasyDiagnostics.
More expensive but probably a better buy if their Diagbox is anything to go by - they offer a small discount to forum members. See here.
Note that we have no connection with Easy Diagnostics, this is just an offer for forum members as so many have bought from them and been satisfied with their service.
