Troubleshooting radiator fans '99 Xantia

Post by veroni »

The radiator fans on my 1999 Xantia aren't working, and neither is the AC. The fuses and temperature gauge seem to be working. Removing the brown temperature sensor plug when idling does not lead to the fans spinning up. Perhaps I'd have to check the relays.

Has anyone got any tips on how to locate the issue?

If the gas is low in the A/C circuit, the compressor won't engage and the fan won't start (the fan should come on when the A/C is operational, regardless of temperature).

So if the fan will engage with a direct 12V supply, then it is likely to be a fuse or relay.

If the fans do not run at full speed with the brown sensor un-plugged, then there is definitely something wrong with the fan control system (regardless of the state of the A/C).

See: viewtopic.php?t=31403 and https://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/ ... 86&start=0 for some ideas on troubleshooting, but start with the 3 relays mounted in front of the radiator.

There are a group of relays on the front between the fans that control them, there is also a Bitron unit under the nearside headlamp, also check conduit running across the front end below radiator for broken wires.
