No problem, I should imagine your current oil level will be too high if the dipstick is too short and not reaching the bottom.

Correct dipstick length (top of tube to Max mark) is so critcal that it is worth
- obtaining the correct one, as per VIN
- comparing old with new, as a double-check
- asking a friend (with guaranteed identical engine) to measure theirs, as belt-and-braces check.
Results of over- or under-filling could be catastrophic.

In this case Chris the one he already has is incorrect, so is probably already an incorrect replacement. As long as the VIN is from that engine, the part will be correct, as again, if comparing with another owner who has also replaced it with the wrong one, then one is no better off I would suggest.

You are right, Marc, on both accounts.
Replacing by VIN is the safe bet.
If repairing an existing, though, the dimension must be preserved.
There are many ways to nobble an engine: getting the sump level wrong must be one of the daftest!

All good advice guys. Thanks for your trouble as usual.
I've ordered a new one and I'm going to actually swap it over next time I do an oil change, with all of the double checks Chris suggests (including my two spare XUD9's) and a measure of how much oil comes out; allowing a bit for that which remains in the engine. Would explain why the oil's always disappeared if filled beyond the minimum.
Got half an idea the 26mm difference by the way, between the S1 and S2 Dipstick relates to the top of the Oil Filler (later screw, earlier pair of spring clips); hence the different lengths; off to check Vulgalour's BX Thread and my own old pix of my 309.

Hiya folks,
My wife and I have got a ZX 1.9TD Volcane, and the top of the dipstick has recently disintegrated. I got to reading this thread because the car is near to its MOT date and I thought I'd better buy a new part. The funny thing is that our old dipstick is much shorter than the 526mm and 500mm of the two XUD varients talked about in earlier posts. More troubling is that I can't think where this wrong part has come from or how long it's been there.
I was hoping that someone could kindly help me with a correct part number.
The VIN is VS7N2F50060F51146.

The part you need is item (6), part number: 117415.
It should be 526 long for your vehicle. They cost £19.44 as of today direct from your Citroen dealer including UK VAT, so the equivalent in Spain most likely.

The correct part according to the VIN arrived yesterday, not from Citroen but online and only 4 euros + postage. It is a fair bit longer than the one that is damaged that is currently in the engine. If that shorter part has resulted in way too much oil in the car, then it has been like that for a LONG time.
The problem now is that the new one doesn't fit which has got me scratching my head. It seems to hit metal, or bottom out, a full 3 cms before it reaches 'home' on the filler cap.
So I went to Citroen, who confirmed the same part number for the VIN, and showed me one they had in stock, which was identical to the new one I had bought. Nobody at Citroen could understand why this part won't fit.
Does anybody here know what the dipstick might be hitting? The bottom of the sump, or is there something like a filter at the bottom of the filler tube?
The car could probably do with an oil change so if the only solution is to put the correct amount of fresh oil in and adapt the stick to hit the mark, then so be it.

I can only think that the part that has broken off may be lodged in the bottom of the dipstick tube. It may also be a possibility that somebody has had this issue previous to your ownership and may have had the same problem - so any broken parts may be stuck?
The only way really is to get them, to check it out when you have the oil changed. They used to remove the broken parts when changing the oil routinely, but gave up as it was becoming a common occurrence. In your case it may be worth them getting the broken parts out though on this occasion.....

That is one way to go, to be sure the oil level is correct.
Can you make a judgement about on what the new stick gets stuck [don't try saying that with your teeth out...] by sighting up how far down the dipstick end gets with it held next to the outside of the dipstick holder? Sump bottom, or something else??
Maybe try something else (non-breakable) down the holder to see what that does?
