Rear spring caliper missing

Post by PepotUK »

Hello guys. I have a peugeot 307 petrol 1.6v and had it serviced today. My mechanic told me that my return spring on the offside rear caliper is missing. Would want to save money so haven't had it done, he told me it would be okay as brakes are not seizing and advised me to have it done once I need my brakes replacing (which is years from now it time allows). Question is, if I would do it myself, can I source a rear caliper return spring? And how do I put it in? Is it an easy job? Never would I change the whole caliper if possible. Thanks guys!

It's only a return spring for the handbrake so if it's working, it's probably OK. Peugeot don't list it separately, but it might be available from a specialist such as Big Red.

Yeah mechanic said brakes aren't seizing or sorts. Should I just let it be then? Any repercussions if I dont have it done?

Is that spring not needed for the handbrake self adjustment to work?
Most hand brake self adjusters on callipers won't work if the lever is not brought back to its stop by the spring.

It shouldn't be too hard to fit - although it might be a strong spring! There are possible 2 types of brakes fitted, so those might not be the right ones; post up your VIN (It will hide itself) and I'll check what's fitted.

Would the lack of a spring be an MOT failure if a tester spots it?

No idea mate. Cant remember if mine had the rear springs even last time I had MOT. I went to a new garage for a service this year and they were the first ones to point it out to me. Does yours have?

Yours has Lucas brakes, so those look like the right ones.
