Non Pumping Lucas Injection

Post by xsaras4ever »

Hello to all.

We have managed to "create" another 205td by saving a very good car with a knackered engine and assembling an engine from various parts we had in stock.

A block/pistons/crank from one source, a head from another, gearbox from another source etc.

We have finally put it all back together and on the first attempt to start we do not have any diesel coming out of the injection pump.
It is a Lucas pump.

Our first check was on the stop solenoid and it is activating correctly.

We know that the pump was unused for 4 years and it was dry so we removed the return banjo and filled the pump with diesel.

We cranked again.

On removing the stop solenoid for the second time we noticed pressure of diesel under it, which was good.

We have left it overnight in the hope that the diesel within will unstick something and today our first check will be to hit the pump a few blows with a blunt instrument in an attempt to dislodge anything.

Years ago we had a non-starting JCB with a lucas pump and we removed the top of the pump, sprayed wd40 on everything, jiggled around the parts within, re-assembled and hey presto - it fired up and has been good since.

Maybe the same solution here ?

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance.

Firstly was the original pump a Lucas because Lucas and Bosch have different fuel delivery pipe configurations - just a thought. I have never had a Lucas pump fail while in service except one on a BX on which the front bearing failed. it was still working but pouring diesel out everywhere.

Its quite possible that it has got damp and rusted something up but the residue doesn't usually gum it up like petrol. As it would seem that you cant do it much more damage anyway I would suggest you try pumping petrol through it from a temporary supply, that might shift anything that is causing it to stick, disconnect the injection pipes so you can see if there is any sign of fuel - or WD40 if you have enough.

Is the fuel circulating through the pump, coming out of the return connection?

This fault is often caused by the metering pin being gummed up... Hence why WD40 sometimes works...

Easy enough to fix... Pop the lid off, disconnect the linkage between the bellcrank on the top of the pin and the governor arm... Remove the pin locking plate and lift the pin out...

Give it a good clean and reassemble...

If you can't visualise what I've described I can dig out a picture of the pump showing the pin and its linkage...

I'd never recommend dousing a pump in WD-40 to try and fix it...

Hello to all.
We removed the top plate this morning and freed off everything that we could see that looked like it should move. We also removed the pressure valve looking thing on the engine side of the pump and freed off the piston.
Also did the gadget on the rad side of the pump which has two wires to it - one to the choke lever and hence to earth - the other to the live coming from the stop solenoid.

Yes Jim , can you send us a drawing please ?

Thanks to all.

I suppose the solenoid is OK, have you tried fitting it without the needle?

Hello to all.

did everything with this pump and it does not pump diesel.

We fitted a BOSCH pump and injector pipes (which had been unused for about 5 years) and it pumped straight away.
Bled up the injectors and the car fired instantly. Bit of a miracle as its a collection of parts from all sorts of spares (block and pistons from one source , cylinder head for another , injector pump from another etc.)

Another 205td saved. :-D :-D
