Thanks fir the reply Marc. Been a manic few days so haven't had chance to get on and reply.
New battery turning up today, I just don't trust the one that's fitted. So I'll be fitting it tomorrow, and hopefully not screwing up this BSI reset. Just one question, where you've said check systems functionality, check what exactly? You mean press the button on the instrument cluster that checks the system?, or something else?

No, don't press anything - it really means when you have the ignition on just check to make sure the lights on the dash fire up ok - nothing more than that. :-D

I think (ish.. maybe) that I've done it right. New battery on, new HID bulbs as the others were blue and about as much use as a candle... and it seems to have remembered every setting barring the time and date. So hopefully I've done it right and no more eco mode

So, I did what you suggested Marc, got a pay as you go SIM. Put it in my phone, topped it up, them put it in the car, no signal showing and every time I dial a number it says call unsuccessfull. Any ideas?

Hi Gav - I should of said you need one of the older SIMS - The RT4 accepts 3.3 V SIM cards, the old 5 V and 1.8 V SIM cards are not recognised.

But some of the newer 3G / 4G ones may not be compatible with the unit. Try and grab on older 2G PAYG card from an old phone.

Elis (EDC5) used a 'GiffGaff SIM in his RT4 Gav, so maybe that will sort it.

I've ordered an old style 3v sim, hopefully will turn up before weekend, same kind that I have in the tracker attached to my dogs collar in case she decides to take herself for a walk again.
Strange thing happened last night though, I've left the sim in that I put in at weekend, and while I was sat at traffic lights, glanced over to see that it had one bar of signal? Didn't get chance to try calling a number to test it as the lights changed and the signal dropped. Wonder if it's an issue with signal or is that just wishful thinking

Perhaps the slot is a bit dusty and not making good contact with the SIM. Maybe blowing into the slot a few times might help?

Just removed the sim and blew the slot out with an airline at work, still no different and I can see marks on the new SIM where it meets the connections in the rt4, so I'm assuming the connections are all good.
It's that brief moment of it having signal last night that's confused me, it clearly showed signal. Just wondering if there's a loose connection somewhere at the back of the unit, because I'd say someone has had this unit out before judging from the marks where you put the release pins in

In that case you want to check the maroon coloured FAKRA connector at the back as that is the GSM antenna connection. If that doesn't sort it you can buy a cheap GSM antenna for testing purposes and if it resolves the issue just hide it in the dash somewhere.

Luckily the sim I got and topped up works fine too. So the old 2g sim I ordered can stay as a backup for my dog tracker just in case.
So that's another one off the to fix list sorted. Still heater flaps to look at, and it's hesitation I've noticed it's got.
Need to thank you all for the help, I'd have been scratching my head for days
