Very noisy engine at 60mph+

Post by dayloon »

Hi all. I've got a Peugeot 3008 2010 1.6HDi sport automatic. I have an issue with it when doing 50-60mph. Because it's an automatic it's always in 6th gear at this point and as soon as I reach about 55mph the engine becomes extremely noisy. It's the same kind of noise you'd expect from a car if you were doing 60 in 3rd gear, like the engine is really struggling and very noisy. The rev counter is still under 2000 revs though.

To be honest I'm not sure if this is a problem or just a "feature" of the car.

Any ideas

Hi and welcome.

Can you Post your PM your VIN so I can see exactly what you have and I'll have a look to see if I can find any info.
  • So are you saying it takes too long to change gear?
  • Are the engine revs increasing without the relative increase in acceleration?
  • Are there any odd smells you can detect?
  • How many miles has the car done?
  • When was the gearbox oil last changed?

I wonder if the transmission is over or under-filled with fluid?

What is the effect if you hold it in a lower gear at that speed?

But this is all at engine revs of no more than 2000 at 50-60mph??
Could it be some dreadful resonance/vibration - ?? exhaust touching body, a heatshield loose.
Engine not reported as racing, which suggests gearbox is at least behaving predictably.

How does it drive on the way up to 50-60mph?
What's it like in the lower gears (and maybe higher engine revs)?

I would certainly start with changing the transmission fluid first if it hasn't been changed in 8 years...

Almost certainly an EGS, so no effect from changing the gearbox oil. It should be possible to put it in manual and try in a different gear to see if engine speed or road speed related. It's probably a wheel bearing or similar... need to hear it to get a better idea.

Some of those 3008s have AM6 components too though and could be AT3 or AT6 - but he hasn't come back with any specifics yet, so until we know more.... :)

Thanks for the replies, sorry for my delay in replying. It's totally fine in lower gears, even as it goes past 2000 revs. It's only when I hit the 55-60mph mark onwards. It sounds like the engine is struggling and the accelerator vibrates slightly. It's the kind of noise you get if you try to do a high speed in a low gear.

I actually had my whole transmission changed in June (at great cost) because it just breaking down with "gearbox fault" warnings. So it's got a brand new transmission and brand new transmission fluid.

However... This particular problem was there before that issue and it's still there now so I don't think it can be related to the transmission fluid.

Who replaced the gearbox and was the gearbox ECU software calibrated after replacement? There is a procedure to follow to ensure the gearbox performs properly depending on what was done. This involves using Diagbox to undertake the calibration. If you have an AM6, (we did ask for the VIN so we know what box you have on it) this involves (depending on what was replaced):

[1] Replacing the automatic gearbox without replacing the ECU
Perform the following operations:
  • Initialisation of the neutral position of the gear selection lever position sensor
  • Adaptation programming procedure of the oil pressure solenoid valves and regulators
  • Initialising the autoadaptives
  • Reset to zero of the oil usage counter
[2] Replacement of the automatic gearbox ECU
Perform the following operations:
  • Read the value of the gearbox oil usage counter from the old ECU
  • Write the oil usage counter value into the new ECU
  • Initialisation of the neutral position of the gear selection lever position sensor
  • Adaptation programming procedure of the oil pressure solenoid valves and regulators
  • Initialising the autoadaptives
[3]Replacing the automatic gearbox and the automatic gearbox ECU
Perform the following operations:
  • Initialising the autoadaptives
  • Reset to zero of the oil usage counter
  • Adaptation programming procedure of the oil pressure solenoid valves and regulators

Thank you. I'll post the VIN next time I'm in the car later. The problem is no better or worse now than it was before the transmission replacement. I'm getting kinda tired of spending money on this car, if I manage to sort this problem without spending several hundred it would be great.

I don't know much about cars but is it worth me calling my local peugeot garage to book it in for a ECU software update? I get the impression they sort out all kinds of issues

That's why I asked who undertook the transmission work you had done, as if it had been via the main dealer, they would have followed the appropriate procedures after replacing it and taken it for a drive to set the auto adaptive up. If you don't have access to Diagbox yourself, I would suggest that that would be a wise move, as they can check the oil counter has been reset where applicable and check whether there is an ECU update and of course calibrate the system if necessary.

It was replaced by a 3rd party garage who used genuine Peugeot parts. I remember them saying that they "reprogrammed the gears" after installing the replacement but exactly what they did I don't know

If taking it to a dealer, you may as well get them to test drive it to get an initial diagnosis of the actual problem, but put a clear limit on the amount you will spend for a diagnosis.

Yes, they'll have to connect it up anyway to determine the gearbox software and carry out any initialisation - so that process would also show up any faults in the system that may be there to start with, but it does make sense at this stage to get them to check it out as they can determine the correct settings for you. Be prepared for about £80-90 per hour for diagnostics / any software updates if required and for any road test to calibrate it.
