My Mk3 berlingo 1.6hdi 75bhp has just ticked over to 110k with no major issues in the service history other than servicing, this is a 2009(59) model. Only real problem is a very annoying rattly airbox feed pipe which is soon to be sorted. The mechanic who services it works for Peugeot and says they haven't had any trouble if their serviced regularly.

Depends what age the mini is, if its a 2011 model or later then its got the better BMW 1.6 unit fitted rather than the PSA unit which i believe you're referring to, so no point in having a look at minePhilGreaves wrote:Don't the new minis use it now? has anyone looked at these?

Re: 1.6 Hdi / DV4 / DV6 turbo feed modification.
Our Mini which I hated and called a Bini and was towed back to the dealer 3 times before it was 2 years old, was a 60 plate 1.6 diesel which had the psa engine. It was 6 months old when we bought it, it was the dealer demo and the dealer told us their new demo had an updated engine, which probably meant the BMW one.

Removing the dpf is quite a big job, especially on your 1st attempt, but there is nothing impossible, it's just nuts & bolts.
We remove the radiator on most cars for easier access.
I would strongly recommend removing the filter on ALL 1.6 hdi engines. We have had some well looked after vehicles with turbo failure, so don't think yours will be ok.
Would you recommend the same for 2.0 HDI 16V 138 RHR engine?

I assume you haven't found where the turbo is hidden on the RHR engine
I think access to the turbo is really difficult so I wouldn't bother. As long as regular oil changes are used to keep the crud out of the oil then it should be ok.

Thanks for the assurance. I change my oil every year. I use 5W40 since my RHR engine does not have DPF. Should be okay?
Also any recommendations if I should be blanking my EGR using a plate? No issues till now, and have owned this car since 2 years. But was just trying to make sure I do everything to make it last long.

No DPF on an RHR? Very lucky . So yeah I suppose you don't need the special Total oil that I have to use.
Truth be told the EGR fouls up the inlet quite badly, I’ve removed my air doser just to see into the manifold and it was caked in tar-like filth. Not sure what I'm going to do about it really, I suppose I'd have to remove the inlet manifold to clean it properly.
Not sure if blanking your EGR is legal in Portugal but it isn't here so I won’t say anything on the matter

Yeah its a March 2005 model, probably the Euro 3 stock before it went to Euro 4.
My 1999 2.0 HDI Xantia 110 , has never given me any problems despite having an EGR. Did they mess up something on the RHR that I hear more complaints about the EGR?
Legality is really not much of an issue here! So whatever is best for the car is what matters. The MOT equivalent never do such detailed checks, and nor do the insurance care about it.

Re: 1.6 Hdi / DV4 / DV6 turbo feed modification.
I'm not sure if they messed up with the RHR but I remember a few years ago my dad had two Peugeot 306 1.9 diesels, one newer than the other. The intake manifold for the newer one with EGR was disgusting, again, covered in a tar like substance. The other one meanwhile was spotless. I think EGR can be done well but there again it can be done poorly too.
Sounds perfect , Next you’ll be telling me that Portugal has sunny weather and not constant rain
Re: 1.6 Hdi / DV4 / DV6 turbo feed modification.
That's also mostly true!
Nice weather makes it much more fun to spend the weekends doing stuff on the car!

Re: 1.6 Hdi / DV4 / DV6 turbo feed modification.
Is there anyone that know for sure if the oil contamination causing the sot mix clogging the intake manifold and valves are caused by crancase ventilation not being efficient enough in avoiding oil vapour reaching into the intake manifold? Or can it also be as I've read some about, the DPG causing so much back pressure in the turbo so oil are pushed trough the turbo bearing and into the intake manifold?

Re: 1.6 Hdi / DV4 / DV6 turbo feed modification.
Some good info in here. I've seen more sources that I'd happily trust say to take the gauze filter out than I have seen saying to leave it in. I have my new (to me) 2008 1.6 in bits at the moment while doing the cam belt so I've taken off the exhaust & the oil feed pipe behind. There's no blockage visible in the gauze filter but I think based on the wisdom in this thread that I will remove the filter before putting the oil feed pipe back on. Having read a lot on the subject, I still can't see any good reason for having the filter there in the first place.

Hi guys. Bumping this thread. I've just baught a 407 1,6HDI with only 88000 miles on it. I got it really, really cheap.
I want to remove the wire mesh filter on it. Do you know if there is a step by step instruction or video anywhere?
The car runs fine and I do not have any lack of power, but in my opinion the turbo has a slightly too loud whining noise. So I'll change the oil and remove the wire mesh filter. But I'll need guidance from a guide or something to do it...
