A question, smoking.

Post by Gibbo2286 »

Is the tobacco industry and the TV industry colluding to get around the tobacco advertising ban by depicting smoking scenes in their programming?

I've noticed lately, especially in the crime stories that the lead actor, the ladies in particular, spends every opportunity to 'have a fag' completely irrelevant to the story line.

Last night's French film on Channel 4 was the latest example, the lady even gets out of bed in the night to open the window and light up.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

Wouldn't surprise me.
The yanks are adept at this - it's called Product Placement.
Big Tob. is also busy buying up the vaping industry... :-k

Watched a programme or two about Dave Allen last night. His cigarette and whisky (ey) was not so much product placement more his trademark.

Advertising is a different beast these days. We have an amazon firestick and its pretty good from anything on youtube to as much variety as we need from catch up and tv and films.

Every so often you do notice "its spy in the camp" persona, like while watching the "Dave Allen" feature on the firestick on TV, up pops links to Dave Allen merchandise on the old laptop in real time! Co-incidence, I think not!

This is an interesting little analysis of Tobacco advertising
According to the WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic 2013

“To sell a product that kills up to half of its users requires extraordinary marketing savvy, and tobacco companies are some of the most manipulative product sellers and promoters in the world.”

Advertising in the past included some odd "reassuring messages"

Any excuse, six seconds of iconic cinematic performance, or how to talk with a tab in your mouth!
