Forum performance issues

Post by xantia_v6 »

The forum has been intermittently a bit slow for the part couple of days, but tonight it is at times unusable.

As far as I can tell at present, this is due to an abnormally high number of hits on the forum (maybe 200x our usual load).

I am monitoring the situation, and will update this when more is known.

[edit] Having just posted that, the server load has come back within normal bounds...

I couldn't get in at all with Chrome a couple of hours ago.

Seems OK now.

There are still server load issues this morning. It looks like generic scanning by bots looking for an insecure server, rather than anything specifically targeted at us.

The forum server has now settled down to normal operation, with no significant configuration changes having been made.

I have a suspicion that one of the many search engine bots may have gone rogue and bombarded us with page requests, but I don't have proof of that.

I can test that theory if it happens again.
